M5 Illuminated Shift Knob w/boot in a Z4

I bought a F10 M5 illuminated shift knob with boot from Tischer. I knew that the knob would fit but requires removing it from the boot by cutting a plastic ring up inside the boot near the shift knob. The leather on the M5 boot seems much nicer (thicker and softer) than the stock boot on the Z4 so I thought I'd try to use the M5 boot. The problem is the M5 trim base is squarish, while the Z4 base is ovalish. The M5 boot is stapled on, while the Z4 boot is glued on. So, out with the staples on the M5 boot it comes right off the base. The Z4 took longer since it's glued on the base, but a heat gun and a molding trim removal tool, I was able to get it off without destroying it. If I didn't care about destroying the stock boot, I could have cut the stock boot and removed it with little effort. The M5 boot fit on Z4 ovalish base with some relief cuts around the corners. I used contact cement and a heat gun to attach the boot to the base. The electrical connector is the same so it's a plug and play.

The F10 shift knob is weighted (ZHP), shifts are more positive, a little shorter than stock M knob, feels nice in hand and illuminates nicely.

Awesome! I just put the knob on my car a few weeks ago and loved it. I thought about trying to do it this way and use the M5 boot, but didn't want to bother with trying to switch the rings around. Looks awesome!

Sweet, nice job! My M coupe's illuminated ZHP knob has pretty pathetic illumination compared to the F10 knob. The F10 knob is very similar in terms of illumination to that in my E39 M5.

Appears that Tischer may have a special on these right now. I believe the part number is 25112284205.

Is the knob essentially the ZHP knob, besides the lighting? Anyone compare how much heavier it is than the stock knob?

The M5 knob is taller than the ZHP knob.

Yep, that's the part # I ordered from Tischer on special w/free shipping.

The knob is much heavier then stock, but I didn't weight it since the boot was attached and would not be an accurate weight. It's heaver than the standard ZHP knob. Check this thread for more info.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but have you seen, felt the BMW performance shift knob? I installed this thing last week on the recommendation of a fellow member, and I just love it. The weight is perfect and the lenth is also great.

That's the review.

Not for me, it looks pretty tiny, but it's whatever works for each individual that matters. That's why we have choices. Thanks for sharing and showing other options.

Just ordered it with the discount. Can't wait to get it installed. Love the illumination. I will NOT be so careful with the stock boot

OP...nice job refitting the boot Look very professionally done. How did you shape the leather around the ring so well? Did you have to use any clamps while waiting for the glue to dry? Or did you just use the heat gun and forced the glue to dry while shaping the leather?

Can someone take pictures or measure the M5 knob versus stock? If it's not that much shorter I might pick one up. With the SSK I prefer having the additional leverage.

Thanks... Have you ever used contact cement? It sticks on contact so you don't have to wait for it to dry, no clamps required. Better make sure you got it where you want as there's no moving it once it makes contact. A heat gun will help to shape the leather a little.

Thanks marin, from the picture it looks like it's pretty close to stock height.

Never used contact cement before...good to know of an additional adhesive option. I guessed it isn't so bad since there are 4 cutouts (for the tabs) to help with the alignment. I may attempt this someday when my lighted ZHP wears out. Thanks again for the "show & tell".

I had to make the 4 cutouts in the M5 boot which didn't have any cutouts like the stock Z4 boot did. Not very difficult, just have to commit and cut...
