race recording
Hello All
I know a lot of you take your cars to the track. I see a lot of video recordings that show the forward view and the car's location on the track and sometimes you see the rpms or speed or both. Someone said it was recorded on the iphone. Is there an app that you recommend to do this? Thank You.

I don't have direct experience with this app, but I believe it's pretty popular and does what you're looking for.

As wonton180 points out, Harry's LapTimer is very good if you have an iPhone. I have been using it over the years with great success.
I found that the built in GPS in the phone is quite good most of the time but tends to get lost on certain tracks every now and then. So I started using an external GPS receiver (I use the TomTom Car Kit that doubles as a charger and a suction cup mount) and its never skipped a beat. I also use the Elm Can WLAN II OBD2 cable that hooks into the car's OBD2 port and create a wireless network inside the car. Harry's can connect to this and pick up RPMs, throttle and brakes and gear information and overlay onto the video. You can also configure a preset RPM near redline where Harry's with start flashing a gear indicator as a shift point reminder. I like the setup, though the downside is that since it is a windshield based suction cup solution, some clubs don't allow it. I need to figure out a better and more "permanent mounting for this or go with an external timer like an AIM Solo DL. |

+1 for Harry's. Forget other software requiring you to overlay data on GoPro video. The only weakness on Harry's is the iPhone's camera, but it's a small loss given the convenience of an all-in-one solution.
Harry's website has a recommendation list for external GPS and OBD2. I would also recommend running an external microphone to the floor of the hatch to eliminate wind noise and pick up your exhaust.
