That's beautiful, but when I see something like this I kind of wonder what the point of owning it was – this car has been driven an average of 278 miles per year. Why buy such a cool car just to look at?

Even as an investment, it doesn't really work out. According to KBB, the sticker cost of a Z4MC in 2007 was $50,795. I'm sure there were options on this one, so let's be generous and say it was $60,000, which makes it ~$95,000 in today's dollars. If you'd invested that $60,000 in an S&P 500 index fund back in 2007, you'd be looking at a value in the neighborhood of $355,000 today. So yeah, not a great financial choice if the idea was buying the car as an investment.

I just don't get it. Buy a car to drive it, not as a museum piece. IMO, anyway.

The problem with a car like this is actually driving it. It should be driven. But the BAT crowd will way over price it. Someone will buy it and then are they the one who drives it and kills the value by adding miles to the chassis? No one wants to take the $30K depreciation hit to actually enjoy the car.

No point of buying a car if you can't actually enjoy it! That's why it's wise to buy an imperfect car that you can enjoy without the guilt.

On the other hand, you'll take a $30k hit on a new EV as soon as you drive it off the lot today. You already know which I would rather own.

One needs to throw quite a bit of new parts into it in order to drive it I'd assume.
Most likely the engine will start leaking oil badly after the very first spirited drive, all the seals (including both main seals) are prob bone dry and cracked already.
Besides, I'd be very concerned about the state of the cylinders and rings at this point. I really doubt the previous owner was spraying fogging oil into cylinders regularly.
Then the brake lines... have they ever been flushed?
Etc....

In 2019 I found a mint 1982 E21 320i within driving distance from my home. 56,000 miles. Seller was a 'Vette enthusiast but found this BMW and he bought it because of the condition. He was moving and downsizing. The time was just not right for me to get to Philly and get it. I had to pass. The price was $13K. Someone bought it a week after I had found it. He flipped it on BAT for $25K. It was not worth $25K. You'd not have to drive it to not lose your ass on it. I despise BAT.

Back in 2019 I was still driving 35,000 miles a year to my office. Just one or two days a week would put 1400 miles on it a month. And where I live, if I leave a car sit for a few days, a rodent will move in and chew a wire somewhere (I posted last year about my Z4). And it was wintertime and snow and salt everywhere I didn't want to pick it up and drive it home in the salt or even trailer it.

It was just bad timing.

Just was looking at this car. This is the perfect spec. A bit much ( $$) but considering the mileage…not bad at all.

One of the best BMW design silhouettes of all time!

I remember looking at one of those with my dad back in the 80's. We ended up buying a 1982 VW Scirocco with a 1.7L 74hp motor (it became my first car). I can't imagine buying one today. It's neat looking, but it would get old quick (even with it weighing only 2500lbs). In reading up on it, the 320i started in the US in the late 70's with a 110hp 2.0L, but due to emission standards dropped to a 101hp 1.8L in the 80s. The cool version was the 323i (with a 140hp I6) which was never sold in the US (I remember seeing some gray market versions when I was a teenager).

The hammer went down at $63k, that's a really strong number. At the end, there were 3 bidders that must have really wanted this time capsule. With the past BAT sales history on these, it's not really showing too much of an upward trend in value, yet...

I realize what I’m about to say is not anything new, but issue is the car is still a polarizing design. I think it’s crazy when I see a low mileage E46 go for nearly $100k and yet this beauty only went for $63k.

Though the M coupe has gained more traction recently, I just don’t see these cars gaining true collector status for at least another 10+ years. But unlike the 1M, most of us bought these cars with the intent to drive the shit out of it so not sure how many low mileage examples will even be left by by then.

I have no intent of selling, next owner will be one of my kids.

IMO, it's better stay this way. I don't really want GT3-like hype about our toys.
This will drive prices high even for parts, and stupid vloggers will be crashing them left and right. Nah! The whole point of my Z4M for me is lots of fun for quite reasonable money

PS: ditto on this

This. I bought my non-M to put into my daily rotation when I was commuting 35,000 miles a year. Now 10 years later with a smidgen under 123,000, barely driving it 2000 miles a year, I so much now enjoy it even more. Why would a owner not want as much seat time in a E86 as he could get?

The Ms get all the attention; meanwhile the delightful 3.0si coupes & verts continue to fly under the radar. Especially the 6-speeds!
