Power fluctuation around 3K RPM
I did a quick search and didn't see this posted yet.
Anyone ever notice during acceleration a bit of a flat spot around 3K RPM or is it just my car? |

how many miles on the car?
has the vanos ever been serviced? That's about when vanos advances the cams maybe the solenoids aren't activation properly? (sticking) Any signs of leaking oil under the vanos? (O rings)

Car just *klicked* over 100K km this weekend.
Previous owner never had the VANO's serviced. I just talked to him this morning. That likely means that the VANO's filter has never been changed. Oh boy. I will have a look for the oil leakage as well. I assume that's usually the VANO's sealing plate unde rthe solenoid that needs replacing or bigger problem then that?? I guess don't know until I look at it. I see ECS Tuning has various kits available. I wasn't able to find anyone here in Canada that sells anything like this. So what I know right now is:
I dropped a line to Beisan and they said my car is a little light on mileage to be experiencing VANOs issues. But they also said that I should consider the VANOs and VANOs rattle repairs they have as preventative maintenance. I read through the procedures. I'm pretty handy and I think I could get through it but it's a daunting task as I'm no mechanic or even close. It would likely be the most advanced thing I've ever tackled. And it would be a bad thing to get wrong. |

The timing is what's bothering me with regards to tackling this myself. I don't have the confidence to dive into that part of the project at this time. I think everything else I could get through but very concerned about messing up that timing portion.

As the Vanos kicks in the car really comes alive from about that point.

I you decide to tackle it, this might help.
Note that the exhaust measurement is for a TurboToy/Dr.V-C300 hub, which I would highly recommend if your going in there. Oh, forgot to mention there's a few hundred bucks in special tools required.

My "butt-o-meter" feels like just after 3000 RPM, the car is no longer pulling as hard. So it's the opposite effect really. It's not a huge drop off or anything, but something very mild and feels odd to me. I'm pretty picky with these things.
I had my buddy, who is a mechanic, look at the Besian procedure and he said he doesn't want to touch it because of the timing. He's very conservative with regards to messing with other people's car as well and he's never done this work on a BMW S54 either. I was more hoping for him to just watch over my shoulder and let me do the work but he's not comfortable with that arrangement as he said he'd feel responsible if something went wrong. I haven't checked for codes as the car seems to run fine otherwise. |
