DIY Install: BMW Z4 M Brake Cooling Kit by Westersund
Hey everyone,
I bought this kit off forum member Westersund a few months back and I'm now just getting around to doing the install. I will use this thread to update my progress and serve as a bit of a DIY manual. Hope you enjoy! Link to FS Thread First step was to get car up in the air and remove bumper. All of my fender liners were cracked, so I removed those and tossed them in the trash. My bumper had a lot of scrapes and started to look pretty nasty. I put the bumper up on saw horses and washed/degreased the paint and inside bumper as well. Then I masked off the bumper to get it ready for dip. |

Next, i painted the bumper. Took around 4 -5 coats, really took my time to go smooth. Finish turned out ok. In the end, it took me around 20 minutes to clean up the lines with a razor and I think it looks much better than before.

Ok, I know I keep going on about my bumper and this thread is about a brake cooling kit install, but hold on I'm getting there soon!
Because I've deleted my headlight washers, i no longer need the brackets on the front bumper. I decided to use a dremel and cut them out. This was super easy to do and saved at least 3 pounds, probably more on the front bumper. |

While the bumper was off, I removed the OEM ducting and tossed it, drilled a hole on the oem duct bracket to relocate the horn on each side. Then I used zip ties to mock up the mounting and see how it fits behind the bumper. Everything comes together so nice! I'm waiting for primer/paint/hardware to get here in the mail and I'll update this thread with progress.
If you can zoom in on last pic, the quality of those ducts is pretty nice. They line up extremely well. |

Re touch up did you use rattle can? If so what company did you go with to make the paint?

Primed and painted all metal parts yesterday, still waiting on fender liners to get here. I had a little helper for this step.

When I painted my parts for my race car I used black rust protection paint (no need for primer) and heat resistant paint on the backing plates (no primer needed). Works a treat! If you don't use heat resistant paint on the backing plates the paint can start to boil if you're unlucky.

I painted mine as well - great suggestion - I used heat resistant matte black paint. Still haven't mounted it! Damn COVID has the US and Canada border closed, and this is bundled up with a bunch of work a shop across the border is going to do for me.

I made some progress this weekend. Front ducts are mounted and fit pretty good. I would say 8/10 as of now. I just need to take the bumper off again and tweak the mounting screws a little.
Not related to the Brake Cooling Kit, but the cheap fender liners I bought off Amazon. These are great! The fit is so so, but I managed to get all the screws in. I would buy these 10x over the OEM liners as I spent $50 vs. $500+. Hope you enjoy the pics! I'll be back at a later time to sort out the hose and backing plates. |

No mods to the fender liners, I just had to push/pull them into place. Suggestion is to start at top of the wheel well, then work back to front. Once i got a couple screws in, the rest was easy and didn't take long.
Keep in mind, in a few weeks I will be back to cut a hole in the liner to route my cooling hose. |

And folks! Don't forget to zip tie the hose to the shock. Had a customer here in Sweden who zip tied the hose to the sway bar mount only, he thought my product was a little weak that broke.
I thought it was kind of self explanatory that you don't want the hose to pull the 3D-printed funnel everytime you turn or God forbid the tire rubs the hose and pulls the hose hard.
