If they brought him in, must have been for a good reason. Took me 5.5 hours with a couple of grub sessions. Did he give you the spec sheet so you know which valves needed adjustment for future techs?

At what mileages are the valve checks due? I can't get access to the maintenance schedule posted here.
Anyone has done this at the dealer or indy shops, how much $$?

I believe it's around 600-660 gallons of fuel ~25k miles. Out of warranty, dealers charge from $1100-1400, indie shops seem around $600-800 around here.

600-660 gallons @ 22 MPG is ~13k-14k miles ?
I doubt we get 39MPG if 25k miles and 600-660 gallos is the correct figure... Will the car computer indicate the valve check is due?

Sorry man, 660 gals is the oil interval. the valve adjustment seems to hit around 25k, some going through fuel faster have had to have it done earlier. I like to do it every 15k, regardless as it's not that difficult, just time consuming.

He might of exaggerated a bit on the time, who knows. I wasn't very happy that they couldn't do the car that saturday (when they were open). He was complaining how long it takes... I then replied, at least you can access cylinder #6 unlike the E46 Ms. |

Takes a solid 3 hours just for the valve work and associated assembly/disassembly. The fluids are an hour in addition.

Yeah, it's definitely a good half day job; depending on the # of shims to be replaced.
It's a VERY satisfying DIY, knowing it's done right.

Yes, agree. Lots more room, especially in the rear, than the E46 bay, where you'd want a mirror to see if the rear gasket was setup properly. Zed engine bay is a thing of beauty when it comes to roominess.

Anyone have any experience with this specific issue in NE PA. Also, my M is an 08 and under Insp I in the maintenance manual that came with the car, "check and adjust valves" is NOT listed under inspection I. Since BMW took it off the list of items inspected on the documents that came with the car, I'm expecting a big hassle. But I'm going to feel my dealer out anyway.

Caddy, you are in ontario. how many times have you made it on your car ? mine is a 2007 with 35000 km. warranty (US car) is ending in january 2012. Car will be sleeping from october so, its before october under warranty (if accepted) or from somebody else in 2012 .
engine seems to run great. my only problem is, the check engine is ON for the 2nd time in 2 month. visited the dealer that say it was a O2 sensor. they tested all and ,supposed they were all ok. BUT, problem is back... any relation to the valve job ? |

I dropped my car off this morning and they told me it would take an hour to do the inspection. I again mentioned that it was an M, not a standard z4 (coincidentally there was actually a 3.0 coupe in the service bay) and had the s54 engine and that they couldn't possibly do it in an hour. At that point one of them went to talk to a manager and said they would provide a copy of the valve adjustment report, so I guess they still do this. In the mean time I have a Chrysler Sebring. Wish me luck.

Once you get a copy, can you share the valve adjustment report with us?
How many miles are on your ODO? Thanks and good luck! Quote:
