Comparing Z4MC to the 1 M Coupe
Looked at a really nice Z4MC today, not exactly the color I want. But the car was in great shape and well taken care of, plus I really love the way the Z4MC drives. My dilemma is I really love the 1 M Coupe too. Since the 1M is "supposed" to be a one year run, I feel I must put an order in quickly if I am going to be able to get one before production ends.
My main concern is I have driven a 135 and it just felt somewhat numb and I did not like the feel of the clutch/gear shift, especially when compared to the Z4MC. I am not sure how much different the 1M will feel compared to a 135. I know 1M is a lot more money, but does anyone have any experience driving both? I know with the few amount 1M's out there and I probably will not get a chance to test drive one to make my own comparison. I don't think this Z4MC will last long before it sells, but I am scared to pull the trigger and have buyer’s remorse for not going with the 1M. Any feedback would be great. Sorry to ramble, but I am just confused. Tks. |

I can't say much about the 1M as I have never driven one. I will say if the comparo between a "regular" and "M" 1 series is anything like the Z4 vs Z4M, there will be a significant difference in feel between the 135 you drove and the 1M. I don't like the idea of buying a car without having driven it first. Since you like the Z4MC, why not buy the car as it will obviously be much cheaper. When you get a chance, drive a 1M and you will have the Z4MC to compare it to directly. There will likely be used 1M's around soon and if it is more to your liking, sell the Z4M and buy the 1M- you will probably save some cash either way and you could potentially get to have owned both(a win-win in my book)...

Clutch, clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder and gearbox on 135i and 1M are exactly the same (same part numbers), so the feel should be the same too.

Plus with the money u save, you could take a trip around the world, come home, slap an ESS SC on it, and blow the doors off the 1M, while retaining the feel of the Z4M.

BMW's pretty shrewd by attempting to rope in would-be buyers with the "we're only doing it for 1 year run." Why would they spend their research money to just do a 1 year run? I suspect there may be changes next year that'll make their statement passable... like maybe dropping in a REAL M engine?
Regardless it's going to be an awesome bit of kit, yet conservative enough to be driven around as a sleeper car. For that I'd be game. I think the difference between the 135i & the 1M will be significant enough to justify the purchase. But with the Z4M as a more focused sportscar, I'd rather put my money on one (@ a fraction of the price) and then wait a couple of years for the 1M to depreciate. There will still be a glut on the market then IF BMW really didn't extend the production run. ...my 2¢ |

Speaking of 1M, I got spanked by 1 last night. Fast and beautiful car although I strongly beleieve that car was enhanced. Too bad the driver was a douche and not an enthusiast.

A 1M driver was not an enthusiast? I didn't think the car has been out long enough to put douches behind the wheel.

If BMW builds it, fear not, the douches aren't far behind...unfortunately.

I guess that is the main reason I better wait till I can drive one and make a good informed decision. I was actually leaning towards the Z4MC when I woke up this morning, but I am sure at the end of the day that may change.

Spanked? The performance figures are pretty close from what I have read. Were you trying?

The 1M is the start of a new generation of M cars. The Z4M is a classic of a bygone era.
The two cars go about their business in different ways so you cannot really compare. I look at it as...there will never be a car like the Z4M and there will never again be an S54. The 1M may or may not come back as an M2 but the Z4M will never come back. 370 ft-lbs is a great number, but IMO is a meaningless number. How does the car feel? I know how the Z4M feels and i love it. I gave up 426 ft-lbs and i don't regret it one bit.

I went from a 130i to my 07 Z4MC in December last year. I love it to bits, never a dull moment when I get in to it and I always take a second look when I park it. Its truly an amazing car. At the end of the day our cars are from 2006, so the newer cars will have more technology, might be a bit quicker and handle a bit better but I would still pick my Z4MC over anything else (atm anyway).
I love the look of the 1M, but I just cant get past that interior which looks like my old 130i. I know its not all about the interior with these cars, and nor is the interior of the Z4MC perfect, but it feels so unique and special behind the wheel. Thats my 2 cents

The Z4MC tested by EVO magazine did it in 8:12, and if anyone remembers the original time of the 1M before it was tested "officially" by Horst von Saurma" was also 8:12.
Another thing to keep in mind is that our Z4Ms did the 'Ring on the not-so-great stock Conti tires, while the 1M did it on PS2s. |
