Pits In Windshield
I have lots of small pits in windshield when i am facing to sun. first i thought i should try repair kits but they are useless after reading online reviews. My insurance covers the full glass, so i am getting it replaced through my insurance (Geico). They will be using https://www.safelite.com/
i am wondering if it is good idea to get windshield replaced by them or should i go to BMW? Last edited by SHEEDI; 05-02-2011 at 09:13 AM.. |

If you call safelite they'll run the claim for you. If Geico has glass coverage this claim will be considered comprehensive instead of collision which means no points on your record and nothing shows on a future CarFax on your VIN. But Geico could have a dollar limit on how much they will pay for a BMW replacement. If you agree to a generic replacement they will cover the entire thing. The generics can be inferior quality and in our case may have crappy finish around top tint area and blurry around the curved areas. If you insist on a BMW replacement they'll give you a limit and you can pay the rest out of pocket. BUT: If you find a safelite center and pay IN FULL for a BMW replacement you can submit the paperwork to Geico> Safelite and they are obligated to reimburse you IN FULL. They might give you some crap, but just stand your ground. I know all this becuase a giant rock came up and hit my wife's FX. Our CSAA deductable was $250 and I called the dealer. The dealer said they don't do glass in house and referred me to a local installer who happened to be Safelite approved, so the fact they were dealer referred and Safelite in-network I picked them. Here's the catch- Since my wife's FX has a forward facing lane-departure camera there was no generic fit windshield, so CSAA only covered $580 of the $850 install. I was livid since I had to pay the difference AND my $250 deductable. But a quick phone call with the glass repair shop had me paying only the deductable, and since I have AAA roadside, they chipped in another $50, so my out-of-pocket was only $200. My Z4 has taken two rocks that left multiple chips and one dirt clod left a small crack. The crack isn't spreading, but it bothers me. I'm going to wait a few more weeks and pay out of pocket the entire thing for OEM glass so I get the BMW logo (and quality). Then CSAA can eat the whole bill. |

After a rock put a 6 inch crack in my windshield i too was referred to safelite. After the installation of one sub-par windshield and 3 attempts at others, I finally gave in and had safelite contact BMW for a genuine BMW windshield. What a difference in the quality of glass! Amazing. One of the installers even said to me " why do you think your getting it so cheaply as opposed to the dealer" it doesn't help that BMW wants to rape you with labor charges tho. Good luck!

I dont know why you guys pay that much for a windshield I paid 150 dlls for a brand new windshield with and independent company that I found on craiglist, they gave me lifetime warranty with it so i am really happy.

It seems you got lucky, but if you read Gary07110's post he talks about using non BMW glass and having serious issues with it. Seems the best route is to pony up for OEM glass. BTW, when you say "lifetime warranty" you mean against installation issues right? I am sure if a rock hits the window and breaks it they aren't going to replace it for free.

The lady from Geico told me that this is first and last time they will be replacing windshield glass;
but here is my question... we pay lots of money for insurance every month and they want to install after market parts in our cars..that sucks.???? so i told the geico lady i spoke over the phone that i dont send "AFTER MARKET $$" to GEICO every month; i send OEM $$ every month so why GEICO installing After Market parts in our cars?? |

I know BMW uses Sekurit, Sicursiv, and Pilkington as OEM glass manufacturers. I'm assuming BMW wouldn't be shipping windshields from overseas and went with a local (american) windshield manufacturer for the Z4, X5, X3, etc.
Do we know who makes the OEM glass for the Z4's? |

Pretty sure my windshield is by PPG. Makes sense since it's a domestically-built car. My windshield looks like crap at 40k miles. I'll be tempted to try something non-OEM when I replace it eventually.
