Direct Z4 M fitment: AST 4200 coilover kit (Double adjustable, true monotube design)
For a while now, we've wanted a Z4 M direct fitment AST option for owners who wanted a coilover kit that is truly track worth, and not just based off of street oriented dampers.
If we can get 4 people together then I can make this happen no problem. More have to be made but if we get 4 I'm willing to take the risk of holding onto the rest since these would be the best autocross/track oriented coilovers available. These would not be bolted together from e36/e46 kits like others have. The Z4 M has shorter strut bodies, and we'd have them produced accordingly with valving specific to the car. We are shooting for the 4200 series or 4100 series as those will fit properly on the car. They keep the lower spring perch above the tire which give you substantially more room to fit wide tires under the front fenders. If we go the 4200 route, then custom spring rates are included in the price, and everyone can pick their own rates. These could be paired with Camber plates and rear shock mounts as needed and at a discount. The retail price for a double adjustable 4200 series kit would be around $3,300 not including camber plates or rear mounts. If we get more then 4 people I will see if AST will allow us to do a groupbuy discounted price. We won't do the inverted AST 5000 series dampers, because they will have serious fitment issues up front due to the spring length they require, which sets the spring down next to the tire. That results in having to push the wheel out an extra 15-20mm just to fit the same wheel. As of right now this is a feeler. We welcome your feedback, opinions and questions. Your picture would be more representative if you showed your E36 front damper, because the Z4M uses a shortened version of the E36M3 front strut.
The typical HPDE participant runs 30 minute sessions at most and both the TC Kline and the Ground Control dampers are entirely satisfactory for that type of use. I have used TC Kline double adjustable shocks on my E46M3, which is a heavier car, for one hour sessions in the summer time at Road Atlanta, without any signs of fade or overheating. So I think your allegation that other companies do not supply equipment that is "track worthy" has been proven wrong by numerous of their customers, including me. Having said that, another choice in track suspensions for the Z4M would be welcomed by many. For a true race car, JRZ is the favored suspension on the winning BMWs in club racing currently. |

Will the TCK and GC kits function on the track, of course! I run a TCK kit right now and did so on my 330Ci, too, but I think the AST offering will offer a significant bump up in performance and capability. Note that JRZ does not offer a kit for the Z4M and the Moton kit is universal to all Z4's (not sure how I feel about that) and both are priced at $4000+. Agreed. So let's get this going!

Not ready to jump on the list just yet, but I am iterested.
Do you have experience with the KW clubsport kit? If so, how will this AST kit compare. I have run the GC trake school kit. The performance of this kit was good, but I could not stand the coil chatter in the rear from running short springs. With the taller springs and no chatter I could not lower the rear end of the car. I went from GC to KW V3's. The fit and finish of this kit was superior to the G.C. kit. It Was like installing OEM parts. For street purposes this kit was perfect, but I missed the camber plates and the hardline performance of the GC kit. I now have the KW clubsport kit and have been very happy. OEM fit and finish, camber plates, great performance and no coil chatter. I have noticed that some of the guys running clubsports enentually switch out the springs. What would make this kit superior to the KW clubsports?

We're still working on this. They've been backed up for months now on numerous new fitments, so it's just a waiting game. But knowing who's interested and getting people together will help make it go faster.

What will be the recommended spring rate on AST 4200 , for track purpose?
Does the kit come with end links to connect to sway bars or re-using the stock end links? Does the installation require any cutting ? What is the group buy price? |

I contacted http://vorshlag.com/index.php?cPath=1
and was told that the AST 4200 Z4M kit can be had by combining the front unit of E36 M3 + rear unit of E46 M3. I just ordered one. |

Same price as the E46 M3 kit as shown on the website.
It requires re-use of sway bar OEM end links. I have not received the kit so will know more later. |

I have Turninconcept's spec'd AST dampers with Swift springs and Vorshlag camber plates on my STi and it is a SEROIUSLY good setup without spending crazy money. They are NOT designed to be a suspension to slam the car with, however - so if that's what you're after, look elsewhere. AST makes high quality products and I have had very good experience having my STi suspension rebuilt for reasonable prices.
