Incidentally, I had a chance to test drive an '09 Cayman S with my driving buddy a few weeks after our E89 drive. I must say that if I had the money to buy an E89, I'd instead go to the Porka stealership to plop the funds down on a Coxster instead. On the same stretch of road tested, the Cayman S felt a more driver's car than the E89. And I would *almost* say it gives my M a run for its money. Fortunately, the E86 M is a sexier looker and more fun to drive still. |

Slightly OT but related question. Does anyone know what engine block the E89 is using? Is it the Aluminum/Magnesium N52 or another one? TIA I'm wondering what block BMW decided was best for their turbo versions.

they are geared towards very different people though. i think the new Zed is nice, they did what they had to do for the luxury/price boost. everything from the interior quality to the i-drive is a long needed update for a BMW in this day and age. the 300hp engine is noway near slow and with the new 7 speed dct trans i would love to see a real world test on a quarter mile between the two to judge which is truly faster..considering a human can not shift as fast as the dct, my bet would be on the new zed. the new zed reminds me of a benz 500sl, luxury but the prick has got balls! BMW is a luxury brand and they should be pricey, if you want a decent priced german car then buy a VW. if you want a track/sports car then buy a lotus or new vette for the money. the Z4m is a freaky car to drive for sure, you made the same decision i would if i were in your shoes! is it just me or does the new zed look smaller then the older design in life? |

The twin turbo 3.0 N54 is all-aluminum. Like the M54 series.

The Orion Silver was the one I test drove a couple days ago at Sonnen BMW. I have yet to test drive a regular manual.

the new Zed just looks pissed. probably because it just can't lose any more weight, no matter what diet it tries!

The E85/6 is the better handling car, even with it's horrible OEM tires. It has better steering feel and will be more nimble. It will also accelerate more quickly in most circumstances due to it's superior power:weight ratio and smaller frontal area. The new Z4 will be quicker in certain circumstances because of its broad torque curve and optional DSG. Stock vs. stock the new Z4 will hold to a skidpad with higher G loading, albeit not by much, due mostly to the tires. I cannot speak to the reliability of the new Z4, but the E85/6 has been very reliable by BMW standards.
It really comes down to how you feel about the ergonomics of each car. Which do you really "want to live in" vs. "how much fun is it to drive"? For me that answer is the E85/6 in both cases. It's also about 1/2 the $$$ for someone shopping right now. p.s. A few BMW mechanics I've talked to say that the "35" series of engines are going to be basket cases when it comes to carbon buildup in the intakes. If you plan to keep the car, this may be cause for concern. |

I concur with Palantirion.
Custom coilover setup with KW V2 shocks, H&R/Eibach springs along with my ESS TS2... I'll be walking all over the new Z4 all day long... and probably giving the new M3 a run for the money too. :P Maybe.

That is the only one I have seen. Then again, I have only just seen another Z4M on the road since I bought mine 3+ years ago. |

The new Zed is a larger car. The car does have nice power and is very easy to tune as it uses the same engine as the 335i and software is already available. It should be a beast. Stock, straightline it will give a Z4//M a race. On the track or on some back roads the //M will have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

It's nice you talk about the Z4M coupe being a little faster in the corners, but no faster in the straight. What ya going to do when you come up against a new Z4 putting out 425+ hp with after market suspension, take you coupe home with your tail between your legs.............leave the new Z's alone.

We are all just giving the new Z4 a hard time because of some reviews.
I'm sure once a few are on the road with good mods, and spank a few high profile cars, these negative comments will end. Until then, a Z4MC will beat the new Z4 on most road courses

The Z4 went from a car with the spirit and feel of a sports car to that of a luxury cruiser. The two are vastly different.

The z3 = classic It is still cool, even though retro. The handling is fun if not pinned down, it has a graceful shape and is so little, it is just….. cool. The 1st gen. z4 = slow burn love affair. At first it was a bit weird (not love at first sight) but over time it’s revolutionary design has kept it fresh and still one of the most modern vehicles on the road. It has aged beautifully, and the M version is stellar. After years of looking at it, it appears to be carved out of a solid chunk of metal, especially the side view. The class-leading chassis rigidity did wonders for handling. I prefer the looks of the soft top. The design approach looks pure. The 2nd gen. z4 = one nighter I really want to like it. The front nose is weird - vertical, I guess for Europe pedestrian impact/ safety standards (just like the new 7). The rear takes cues from the 6 series, my least favorite series. yuck. Side view is overdone and the lines don’t have character…. they’re just…. there…. Good initial looks, but the more I study it, the less I like it. Kinda like a girl you date vs. the girl you marry. Will it improve with time?
