Question, is the leather piece in the middle (where the speaker is) separate or removable, or is it all one piece?

It's separate, but glued to the door. I'm in the process of removing mine and it's a PITA...but doable.

sorry guys, I just reread my answer and realized in was a non answer! It is a separate piece, only way BMW could make them, but may be difficult to remove.
