Great thread Pokey. I would've never thought or imagined that a non M would sound that good. In fact, I may like the sound more than the M's I've heard online. I used to have a Cosmos CAI in my 1.9 Z3. Really woke up the car, sounded more than just a 4 banger. AAAAAND my top speed went from 116 to 120MPH lol |

I can answer your question. You will get heat soak with the supercharger in hot weather if that is what you are asking. I have not had any issues mechanically with my Vortech. I recently added an Intercooler to my setup, which works quite well. I know Pokeybritches is also looking into doing the same.

Cooler air is always better. I am running both water/meth injection and ethanol to reduce detonation. The standard off-the-shelf kits are fine to run without intercooling. You'll have more power than stock even when it's hot.

Heat soak is definitely an issue on any supercharger setup for the Z.
The nature of the manifold doesn't allow for a lot of space to pipe an intercooler into the system/car easily (but it's theoretically not impossible). At one point G-Power did make an intercooler as part of their kit for the Z4, but it's impossible to find ANY information on it. I even reached out to G-Power and some of their distributors when I first started looking for a supercharger. I'm running what is essentially a air-water intercooled manifold on the ESS TS2 kit. On a hot day with no fans or air running at the front of the car. The heat soak caused an almost 30whp loss between first and second run. This summer with one extremely hot day at the track I notice power loss and issues with drivability at high RPM (which may have been the old coils which I have since changed). Running an intercooler or methanol injection would be appropriate depending on your goals. |

Problem on my setup is the MAF being before the manifold which is where the heat soak is. It's tough to tell actual temps unless I find a place to tap into within the manifold. Not a big fan of fiddling with that casting.
Ideally I want to get a water temperature gauge into the intercooler cooling line (easier to do that the manifold) and see exactly what those temps are since the water is running straight through the cores of the of manifold. If I can keep the intercooler cool, the air will be cool. I've looked into an auxilary fan setup as well for the intercooler to keep the pump and water running through the system to cool down the cores. |

You don't want to measure IAT anywhere separately from the MAF if the readings are going to be used by the ECU for fuel and timing calculations. While a blow-through MAF isn't feasible on a twin screw setup, it is possible with a centrifugal supercharger. Dave and I have found through destructive testing that the OEM BMW MAF doesn't last long in a blow-through application. Additionally, max reading with the OEM MAF is 1024 kg/hr (350-360 hp, give or take). I'm working on a MAF solution, which takes both a change to the ECU's program code and additional hardware to measure higher than 1024 kg/hr. Most tuners just layer on extra fueling at high rpm, which isn't the right way to go considering the axes max out at 6600 rpm (and I'm fairly certain none know how to correctly recalculate the checksum that prevents manipulation of the axes). Dave's intercooler setup works extremely well on the street, with IAT only changing by a few degrees under boost. His car isn't heavily tracked, but I have measured loads of 1100 mg/stk, which is almost twice what a stock car sees.
