My ESS Supercharged 2.5i Z4
Hi,
I have a 2.5i Z4 and I recently intalled the ESS TS2 kit. The car is an ongoing project and the kit was installed by myself in my home garage. Another self-modification is the front and rear brake calipers and rotors from the Z4 3.0si. The car also has an ESS exhaust muffler. There are a couple of youtube videos i have uploaded so far. You can watch both of them in high quality as well. This video is with the car in idle: This video is with the car on the road but during the brake-in period so revs are kept pretty low: I will add one or two more videos pretty soon..! |

The exhaust is a nice add on for amplifying the low frequencies. This is more prominent at lower rpm. At higher rpm, the engine sound is more clear as well. In general, however, the ESS muffler doesnt change the OEM sound a lot. In brief, I would say that it makes it sound a bit more loud, bassy and clear. |

The only obvious problem at the moment is a rattling noise from the twin-screw assembly itself.
It is evident when the engine is hot and only at idle. In the very beginning, when i had just installed the kit, I really freaked out! It was a Friday afternoon when i finished the installation of the kit. So I had to live in agony for the rest of the weekend till Monday so I could get to talk to ESS about it... According to ESS, that sort of mid pitch noise is to be expected and comes from the teeth of the two drive gears. However, this rattling can be rather annoying. Also, it damages the audio profile of the car at idle... But, as long as it is not a failure-threatening noise and remains just a nuisance, the hell with it...! |

Yes, that is such beautiful s/c whine. It reminds me of my old Mini Cooper S that I modded the hell out of. I miss that whine!
How much does a kit like this run? What kind of tuning are they doing with it? |

I am totally thinking of doing this to my 2.5 Z. From what I can tell, ESS sells the best product out there for this car. However, there are a few nay sayers that really irk me - purists from what I can tell. I respect that, but not the elitist attitude when I ask about FI for this car. Do you still like the mod? Would you make any suggestions prior to installing this? I am hoping if all goes well I can get this installed by April/May next year.

After driving the car for almost 8000 km with the kit on, i have to say that, as long as you service the car and the kit, it should stay reliable.
I change engine oil (castrol edge 10-60) every 5000-7000 km and the oil filter along with it. I also change the twinscrew oil evry so often. All in all, no problems with the kit. The only parts that had to be changed after I put the kit on were all six of my coils. I had the Bremi coils. One blew off shortly after i put the kit on because of normal service life of the Bremi coils. So I changed all coils to Bosch ones and now they still work fine. Next 3 things on the project are 1. heavy duty clutch kit (probably by sachs performance) 2. coilover kit probably by KW 3. LSD diff. from quaife |

Thanks mamasou! I am looking forward to installing this next year. I think I am going to do the clutch, HD shocks and LSD before I do the supercharger. Also thinking about a big brake kit. I did a cost analysis and all these mods combined w the acquisition cost of the car outweigh getting a new Z4M. I did some additional research and spoke to some other and ESS definitely the way to go. Thanks for the tip on the coils, I will check into that as well.

Your list of mods seems smart and balanced. However, I was checking sachs performance and they only seem to have the clutch for the Z4M, nothing for the non-M E85. What makes you think this option is available for non-M Z4s?
