FYI, I just replaced the battery in my Z4M with the O'Reilly AGM unit. The O'Reilly part number #48EXTAGM appears to have been replaced by #48PLT. Looks to be identical in every respect.

Updated part of the list. When I came home my battery was dead and the tender my dad was trying to use wasnt working. Had to jump the car to get it going and had to get to a wedding. An Advanced Autoparts was the only place on the way so I checked their website and the list and went with the AutoCraft Gold Battery Part # 47H5. It works, the car starts and runs fine, but it DOES NOT fit under the battery cover for the MR. I dont know if the coupe has the same design, but the battery is not as long as the stock battery and doesn't fit under where the top of the battery cover on the MR has the sunken part for the air pump and where it screws down onto the battery mount. The connectors to the battery hit this part of the cover in the back just by a little bit and the cover will not bolt down the way it should.
Also, Advanced says the battery will work for the car, which it does, it just does not fit properly.

Odyssey 34R
I bought the Odyssey 34R battery although my MC is in the shop at the moment so I haven't installed it yet. It looks to be a drop-in requiring only perhaps some minor tinkering with the bottom clamp. I use the stereo a lot and often when the engine is off while waiting in the car, and have a (small) Bazooka powered sub in the trunk too, so in addition to the ginormous 850 CCA's the fact that it's a deep-cycle battery makes it perfect IMO.
SPECIFICATIONS Pulse (5-second) Hot Cranking Amps (PHCA) 1500 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) 850 20Hr Nominal Capacity (Ah) 68 Reserve Capacity Minutes 135 Dimensions L x W x H (in) 10.85x6.76x7.82 Metric Dimensions L x W x H (mm) 275.6x171.7x198.6 Weight (lbs) 49.5 Weight (kg) 22.4 34R-PC1500T-A USD$ 275.77 Item # 0785-2060A0N0 DESCRIPTION ODYSSEY Auto/LTV Battery Model 34R-PC1500T-A (Group 34 with tin-plated brass SAE automotive posts - reversed terminals) Whether for everyday or emergency use, today’s vehicles are loaded with more electronics than would have been imaginable just a few years ago. ODYSSEY batteries have been designed to keep up with the changes. Because their plates are made of pure virgin lead (unlike the lead alloy in most batteries), we can pack in more plates. And more plates mean more plate surface area, and much more power — twice the overall power and three times the life of conventional batteries — up to 400 cycles at 80% depth of discharge! ODYSSEY batteries deliver the massive starting power, rapid recovery, and amazing deep cycling capability that today’s vehicles demand. |

http://www.optimabatteries.com/us/en...reversed-post/ I've had really good luck with them in other cars, but their site doesn't even LIST BMW as a choice, let alone a Z car...

I've used Optima before (excellent battery!) but IMO none are better than Odyssey. It must be packed with lead plates because it's freakishly heavy for its size.

I guess I didn't look hard enough at the design of the bottom plate when I picked up the first battery, and will use the longer H6 next time. Don't think it makes too much difference for my needs, to be honest - with the new H5 battery I've never had a problem with starting the car. The car will drain it down eventually, if I leave it stored for an extended period without a float charger on it. |

Just added to the sheet: NAPA 9848, best replacement I could find for my Z4MR in terms of size/specs and was also able to pick up at the local store. Total cost was $160 and it has been fine for 6 months now.

By removing the spacer I was able to put a 94R / H7 AGM battery in my 3.0si. The size 48 (H6) would have been an exact replacement for the stock battery with the spacer remaining in place.
Very happy with the battery and hopefully the extra oomph will help on some very cold days. The only bad news is that I waited too long and let my car get into transit mode before/during the install process. Required a $135 donation to the local dealer to get resolved :-( |

Here's the old setup and the new Odyssey 34R installed. I used the long clamp bolt in the original threaded hole sans clamp and pulled the battery towards the back so the terminal is rear of the trunk trim to expose the positive clamp for easier future sound system modifications. The battery is a tight fit vertically - the positive terminal was about 1/16" taller than that black wrap-over locating brace and required some prying to maneuver the battery into place. The body of the battery clears the brace so it can be easily slid front and back, but just. YMMV with any other brand of 34R. Also, I had to slide a plastic sheet underneath the battery on one side to level it. You cannot reuse the foam block that houses the inflation kit as there is no longer room but I had removed it earlier anyway. There appears to be plenty of room for a 15" battery front to rear.
edit: Someone asked me to clarify whether I retained the black battery under tray as seen in the top two photos and the answer is "yes." Removing it would make the installation much easier and eliminate the problem of the reinforcing ribs on the bottom of the battery case not quite settling into the try. But like I said, I wanted to keep it there. Last edited by m5m3mc; 12-17-2013 at 03:32 PM.. Reason: Clarification |

Just installed the 48PLT:
O'Reilly Super Start Extreme AGM, Part # 48EXTAGM (superceded by part no 48PLT, otherwise identical) from like 11 on the spreadsheet. Fit PERFECT! Thanks again Finnegan!

For M Roadsters/Coupes, what size battery is for the shorter tray setting, and what size is for the longer tray setting? Sorry if the spreadsheet has this information, but I am blocked from accessing it here at work.
Thanks. |

H6 is the shorter one. I believed an H7 will fit the longer tray setting.

Just installed the O'Reilly Super Start Platinum - AGM Battery (part# 48PLT). Zero install issues. And the car started right up after. Updated the spreadsheet.

I just did a warranty replacement of my group 47/H5 battery, and replaced it with a group 48/H6 - this required a modified BMW battery mounting adapter (details below). At the point it was replaced, the battery would seem to accept a full charge from a battery charger, but would last a couple of days at most before it would no longer start the car. The battery was purchased and installed in June of 2012, so was replaced after about 2 years 4 months.
The battery/electrical has been acting up for most of this summer, so I'd say it had problems earlier, solved by keeping it on a CTEK smart charger - it just reached a point where it was un-useable recently. The car is stored over the winter months, but the battery is maintained during that period. The battery was tested at the supplier (Canadian Tire) and found to be faulty, so the new one was no cost under their 4 year free replacement (I paid 5.00 to upgrade to the group 48/H6 size). This is their premium line of lead/acid batteries (Eliminator series) which are manufactured by Exide, one of the BMW OEM suppliers. To fit the larger battery, I had to remove the plastic adapter BMW uses at the bottom of the battery housing, which clamps the right side of the battery in place. If removed to accommodate an H6 battery replacement, the battery is not only free to move side to side, but also move up and down (as far as the bracket spanning the battery fore and aft will allow). This is not a good thing. A spacer can be made to wedge in there and prevent the battery from shifting sideways, but it looks kludgy and doesn't clamp the battery down to prevent it from lifting. RealOEM shows two OEM battery adapters for that right side mount - one for the smaller 50/55AH battery (PN 61216916634) and one for the larger 70AH battery (PN 61216911025). I have the latter on order (cost is approximately 6 dollars from the usual suppliers). For those converting to the wider H6 battery, I'd definitely get this part to ensure the battery is properly secured from lateral and vertical movement. I've updated this replacement info into the spreadsheet below my original H5 battery posting. |

Isn't the OE battery an H6? I fitted an H6 battery back in June without issue (using the shorter tray setting as pictured above)...no modification needed.
