VANOS Filter Replacement!
I had no idea I needed this! ECS is great at marketing stuff like this...

Sure, ECS does a great job at marketing this. I changed my at around 28k and the filter was still very clean and no sign of clogging. That being said, it is not a bad idea just to replace it sonce awhile cause it is so inexpensive.

Shouldn't all Bmw's with Dual vanos have that? I'm going to have to look into that, i know i got to rebuild my E46's Vanos seals soon, might as well replace that screen considering it has 170K+... haha.
My Major 30K coming on on my M also, do it then as well. |

I'm not it's not in the same place, but there's still got to be a screen somewhere in there. The filter is essentially a standard item in all variable valve timing systems that use oil. Just gotta figure out where it is Probably under the valve cover like most of them are. It's interesting how easy it is on the M engines though..
EDIT: I stand corrected atm. Been looking through the catalogs, i cannot find a screen filter anywhere... I'll definitely have to look ddeper into it... but so far, nada. Sorry i doubted ya XMetal Last edited by C-los; 05-22-2014 at 04:37 PM.. |

No worries. I'm a maintenance freak. If there was one on the M54, I would have found it by now...However, if you do happen to find something that I may have missed, info would be appreciated

Has anyone heard of a filter-related failure besides the guys trying to sell this?

No, that's the reasons I quoted the "common cause of VANOS failure" line they used...

Yea, "common cause of VANOS failure" is a stretch.
But if you've lost some bolts or an exhaust hub tab, best to at least check it for swarf. I think it's on the inspection checklist, or has ECS just brainwashed me?

The maintenance schedule (inspection checklist) does not call out for replacing such filter. What baffles me is that how would the main oil filter not able to trap any debris that this mesh filter can? This mesh filter appeared to be more porous than the main oil filter Please educate me.

Yep. BMW probably put it in there to catch honkin' chunks of hub that may jam the Vanos.
Then the shops saw an opportunity to make some cash. They saw me coming. I've replaced it and the O-rings at every valve adjustment. sukah

The Oil filter itself isn't doesn't keep your engine oil clean 100% of the time. For one, maintenance schedule times are getting ridiculously long. Also, the oil filter can only screen the oil between the pan, oil pump(s) and to the filter housing. The reality is, engines run and wear; shavings/particles build up in the system and flow throughout the engine because everything is AFTER the filter. In turn, this means all particles that happen to get into the engine oil from wear, will not be filtered until it's next pass around when it falls back into the pan, and then back up through the pump and through the filter. Also, depending on how often and how well you follow proper maintenance schedules, residual oil/gunk build up will happen AFTER the filter as well, throughout the engine, that little screen mesh prevents chunks of gunk build up from getting jammed inside of the vanos units. Considering how small the oil passages can get, it's the engineers last chance defense against all the odds the engine faces with oil contamination.
I hope this makes sense, haven't had my coffee yet... |

^ All true. The filter is another line of defense, and it's good to have an additional point at which the oil is filtered.
The question I have is this - has anyone experienced a failure due to this filter clogging? If you've opened it up and seen it partially blocked or very dirty, I'll even count that. I suspect the number of particles that this filter catches is so small that it will outlast the life of the car. If something disintegrates and causes enough debris to clog this filter, you have other issues and VANOS is furthest from your mind. The only people I've heard so far saying it's a common failure point are the ones selling it. To convince me I need data - pictures, recalls, or unbiased firsthand experience. It's conjecture right now. With the amount of fear surrounding the VANOS, you could probably sell VANOS motorsport wizard dust that the Bavarian fairies need to maintain good bowel function.
