The sound is reflecting back off the obstruction. It makes the intermittent rubbing I get from the rear DS wheel all the more embarassing. Man, I hope I find the culprit soon.

this thread had me freaking out after i purchased my M this past weekend. I think ive come to the conclusion that about all BMW's ive heard had very chatty engines.... from my old Si to my new M. They dont sound like anythings wrong, just chatty...

i found this thread looking for something else and thought i'd post an update...
when i got the car from nikki (mar 2012), i had BMW DSM perform the insp2 and at the same time replace the vanos cam bolts. the old bolts were the "updated" version and had zero damage to them. the new bolts (looking exactly the same as the old ones) went in anyway. in colder temps... say < 65*... the engine at idle sounds similar to any other BMW i've owned. once ambient temps get a bit warmer though, the tick/tap noise nikki experienced is present. i've compared this against another ///m coupe and two e46 ///m3's... the e46's had far worse noises cracking under the hood than either of the e86's. my conclusion is the same as many here... the s54 is simply loud, clangy, and freaking awesome. keep the wheels moving! -eric
