High mileage coupes
I've noticed many of the coupes are high mileage cars. Should this be a concern for a purchaser?
Do these engines need to be rebuilt?

13K high mileage? This is a S54, there are a bunch of M3 running around at 70K plus. Mine is at 29K, but i drive it as much as I can... When it doesn't rain or snow LOL

I'd reckon a roadster is less likely to be used as a daily driver than a coupe, just due to the practicality of it. Hence, coupes carrying higher miles.
I've daily'd my M coupe for more than 2 months now, and have loved it. Eventually I'll replace my dead DD, but for now, its been a joy to drive the M so much! 50,5 k miles and counting.. |

In my ownership all I have done other than overhaul the suspensions is regular oil changes, spark plugs, filters, coolant flush, diff and tranny fluid and will probably be doing the brakes the following spring. (Maybe oem BBK) Have not touched anything else really. Might look into replacing the pump and t-stat. Have you had issues with them?

I have 4 friends/family with N52 engined BMW's although none of them Z4's. 2 of the 4 had their pump fail at about 70-85k miles. My wife's X3 just got to 80k last month and I plan to replace the pump and t-stat this winter. It's a royal PITA to get to it on the X3 though so it won't be much fun.

I have had my M since 7100 miles, on 29k now. Have changed the oil religiously every 5k miles (not the recommended 15k), hope to be driving this baby well into the 100K range

I drive my MC daily. It is over 63k now. I keep maintenance according to forum recommended intervals, not dealer. I have no idea why people don't drive their cars. BMW are make to be driven. Most mechanics I talked say engine just break in at 100k. My sons have M52 and S52 engines approaching 200k and still running strong.

I'm at just over 49,000 miles on my 2007 M Coupe.
5,500 miles of those are mine since I bought it a year and half ago.

Normally I would have no problem just changing it when it fails but I'd hate to have to deal with this on the way to the track or during an event. I think I'm just going to replace it at 75k. Parts should be around $450 and I've seen some good E90 DIY's posted. |

I'll drink to that Rob I bought my car because it looks nice and it drives awesome!! I'm paying a lot for this Zuker and if I'm paying big bucks for such a great car to collect dust in my garage... then I don't see the purpose for doing so. You might as well tell me you are dating a hot stripper - but you don't want to do the nasty w/ her cus you don't want to stretch her lips... You know what I mean? All it take is for a drunk driver or a teenage girl to rear end you while you are waiting for the light and your car is history.... I say take care of it and enjoy as much as you can. A car is a machine - machines need maintenance and break down... so treat it like so. |

This is my first "upscale" car, my '07 MR. I've been told Mercedes has a reputation for lasting for 200k-300k miles and beyond...and that BMW's reputation is really more of a performance car. Solid mechanically, but doesn't really have a reputation for being that super high mileage vehicle relative to Mercedes. Is that close to accurate? I realize ALL cars these days can probably last till at least 150k if not 200k miles...heck my mother-in-law is still driving my old 2000 Ford Taurus and now has 175k miles on it. I also realize that if you spend enough money fixing things that any vehicle can "last" a long time. But you get what I mean...with standard maintenance, is there a difference?

I'm a big believer in the longevity of BMWs, given proper maintenance. That said, if I buy a used car, I still look for the lowest mileage cars. This way, I know the proper care and maintenance was done along the way. I bought my M5 with < 20K miles in 2004 as my DD...this many years later it has 80K and looks and drives as new. But I'm the one who assured proper engine warm up before spirited driving, specified the duration for the oil changes, performed Blackstone UOA on a regular basis to assure proper oil change duration and look for premature wear, and provided compulsive maintenance. Same will happen with my M coupe, which had 9K miles when I bought it last year.
So I think the cars and the engines can last, but certainly I'd do due diligence in buying a higher mileage car, particularly if it has had multiple owners.

BMW's are actually some of the most reliable cars on the road given you take care of them. My friends E30 had 450k miles on the motor and trans when he sold it. Even towed a 2500 ram at 80mph with it lol (it also pulled the frame a little bit haha)
