At Dealer for Inspection I
Well my M coupe is at the dealer for inspection I. Probably my last inspection before the warranty runs out in August. I got a 135 for a loaner. So far so good I guess, Detailed report to follow.
During the initial inspection, they found the power steering was leaking (I' never noticed or would have suspected) and are replacing the power steering hose.

Seems that's not uncommon with the PS. Mine had the same issue (fixed under warranty when with the prior owner). Someone on our board (can't recall who) lost a day at the track fairly recently due to this as well.
My indie shop recommends a change of fluid to help prolong the life of the pump and hoses (hoses in particular). I don't recall the details, but something about the older fluid tends to be unkind to the hoses. There's a DIY on this somewhere around here I think. Seems like a procedure that's probably a good idea to do every couple of years, don't think it's that pricey. At the very least something to check on as part of the overall health and safety check of the vehicle along with other checks (like oil). So, I have to ask, did you give them the valve inspection worksheet and ask to see what the clearances were and what shims were used? No need to answer now--you can roll that up in the detailed report to follow post. |

hmm might have to look that up and check before every track day. I did not give them a valve adjustment worksheet, but i did mention I would like to know the before and after of the valve adjustment...hopefully that will be enough, we shall see.

Yeah, I need to find the DIY. In any case, adding "check power steering hoses and general condition" to the technical inspection checklist is a must I think.

Find a good indie or at least another dealer.

I don't need a dealer or an indie to take care of things like this as I'm good enough with a wrench and have enough tools to fix minor things like this myself. It just pisses me off that this was missed during the Inspection I/warranty period and now the bill is on me.

The PS hose had a supersession in design and part number a few years back due to leaks.

i had leaks in 3 places
so i just got my car back last week, had oil leaks from valve cover, from timing chain gasket or something like that, and differential fluid leakage thru the seal...49K miles...
Inspection 2, so had to get valve job and did the differential fluid and tranny fluid while we were at it...they also found that i had some cracked belts so that was done too, along with spark plugs. it was a pretty fat bill. Good thing I still have warranty to cover the leaks. I had a 335 vert as a loaner...not bad, hard top vert, is nice. Wife loved it compared to the m coupe |

wow...hmm maybe I should get an extended maintenance warranty, however I don't think I'll put another 25k in two years. Good thing you got it taken care of though.
I got a 135 vert for a loaner, mixed feelings about it. the tq is nice, but its power delivery is not very linear and the sterring feels weird when you turn. kinda artificial. Back seats are a joke, might as well not have them.

car is ready for pick up, dealer "inspected the engine bolts" and said they were fine, I was hoping to get them replaced as a precaution. I'll see what the inspection paper says, dealer stated that "valves were adjusted". I work the rest of the week so I won't see my baby until Sat. Guess I better learn how to do everything myself. = )
Thanks Ron for the post!

If they really did a valve inspection check your paperwork for the valve shims to make sure they actually adjusted something.
Search around here for part numbers. |

Here is a video on replacing the power steering reservoir and filter also, although it is a 3 series it is the same technique, not to difficult.

Power steering leaks are common on BMWs with hydraulic steering. My M5 has been extremely reliable, but has had three power steering leaks over the 8 years that I have owned it. I bought my Z4M coupe with 9K miles...yes, it had a power steering leak. That said, I'll take the leaks over the electronic steering offered in the F10 5 series any day of the week.

On the 91 and 97, the problem are the one time clamps. Replace them with regular hose clamps and you should be good to go. Looking at that power steering line for the Z, looks like the same, BMW clamp that fails.... Its like every 5 years this needs to be replaced~!

My power steering hose has slight weepage that I noticed when I was replacing my engine mount bolts a couple of months ago. My build date is 12/06. It will be on my to do list in the near future. I haven't noticed any added spray on my pan in the last few hundred miles.

hmm i can't get a straight answer. I asked the dealer if they did a valve adjustment, they said they did. I asked how come there are no shim parts on the invoice, they said they kept those in stock and its not a part they have to order so didn't put it on the invoice. They said they adjusted it because the Profile-Gasket:118522 was replaced.
the only parts listed on the invoice were: Profile Gasket 118522 TWS Syntehtic Oil Oil Filter Microcarbon filter Preformed brake flush brake fluid replaced M mobility sealant tire inflating bottle. Power Steering: Expansion Hose Gasket ring Grr, I dont know if I should just take they word on that, but it just doesn't sound right unless all the valves were in spec (even borderline) and they didn't have to adjust them. Plus they didn't replace the motor mounts cause mine were fine, even though I asked them to because they are gonna fail, its just a matter of time. What's it to them though, its all under warranty? I need to learn how to do all this SH*t myself or find a rep indie guy.
