Engine oil weights

Im planning on changing my oil soon. I normally use 0w40 mobile 1 but i was wondering if I chose to use a heavier oil if i would have any problems. I was maybe thinking about doing a thicker oil. Would there be any benefits to running 5/10w40 compared to 0w40? What about 20w50? I'll be doing this to a 2.5i.

I also want to try Royal purple because i have heard so many great things about it.

i used royal purple on my 2.5 z4 it was awesome....it let the engine spin up nice and easy.....thanks to good lube
