Gas Gauge Problem

When I fill up the gas gauge only reads 1/2 full. After I use 1/2 a tank the gauge reads empty. Anyone know what the problem is? I'm guessing the gauge sending unit is broken; but I don't get the 1/2 full part??

IIRC the level sensor is in the tank as a separate item. I did replace my fuel pump, which is in the tank as well. The 03-05 had issues with the fuel pump humming, they also had instrument cluster issues as well, usually with sound notifications. I have not seen anyone say anything about fuel levels. I take it that the tank does get full? ( just not the auto shutoff of the fuel dispenser)?

Had this on a E46 before, previous owner had never filled up more than half a tank in his 3 years of ownership from new. So maybe the float had gummed up above half way, odd time in would very slowly creep up over my 40 mile commute.
