Shift knob problem

My stock Z4M shift knob keeps coming off. It's now extremely loose. I can see the tabs are broken inside. I've read some threads on this issue but it isn't clear to me how to fix this. Does the whole shift knob need to be replaced or can the interior fitting be replaced?

It's probably easier to just replace it unless you want to glue it together. I have some shift knobs sitting around if you need one. I have OE, ACS copy knob etc.

Kav, the lighted one from an M5 is very nice and is weighted. It's amazing the difference in feel it makes when shifting. I was blown away. Didn't believe it would make much difference, but I was very wrong.

You will have to cut and glue the boot onto the Z4M plastic mounting ring, but it's not a hard job. I used contact cement. If you want to go this route, I'll try to find the link to the DIY that was helpful.

I am doing the M5 shift knob exchange too very soon. Link looks very helpful. Thanks for the link. I purchased the M5 one because of all its positive feedback and reviews.

I'll vouch for the F10 M5 knob.
I've had one for years and I love it.
Don't be put off by the boot mods.
I'm terrible with scissors and glue, but I had no problem with it.

Thumbs up

As others have said, the M5 shift knob and boot is a great upgrade.

Don't let pungo's pick fool you. I have it also and the color is identical to the dash lights. It Always looks more yellow in pics. It really is easy to put out ring on. I'm not handy whatsoever with that type stuff and I got it done on my couch in about 10min.

A new basic zhp shifter would do you good, also would be less likely to be pulled off once installed during shifting!

Quick question guys. I'm about to order the M5 knob.

I have the UUC short shifter installed. Has anyone used the M5 knob with this short shifter? I just wanted to make sure it did not make it too low? it seems like the M5 knob sits lower.

I have AutoSolution's short shifter. The M5 for me was too low and too notchy.

You can see the difference in height in this photo, kav. No experience with a short shifter.

I have a short shifter in mine. My zhp fit fine but when I upgraded to the illuminated m5 knob I found myself pulling it off all the time. The base of the knob where the boot meets is just ever slightly longer than the zhp by itself making it not fully seat into the short shifter. I put a drop of silicone into the slit in top of the shifter and it seems to be holding fine as of right now.

That is definitely too short. I'm disappointed but glad I found out before I got the M5 knob.

Oh I love it very much! That's the only problem I had. Other shifters may not even have that problem. Just on mine where it flares out below the knob securing slot, rubs the bottom of the boot attachment ring and doesn't let it seat 100%. I have seen people cut the boot off just to have the illuminated knob, and theirs seats correct. I've been driving it for a few months since applying the silicone and I haven't pulled it off again.

On a side note, only took about 10 minutes to swap my base ring onto the m5 boot.
