0-130mph, 20.1s , Z4M = 1M

I was reading recent car and driver test on 1M coupe.
Interesting to note that the 0-130mph time was exactly the same at 20.1s.

Considering the higher torque on 1M and the quicker launch, I speculate that the turbo boost must have been reduced once the car reaches higher speed. I noticed this behavior on my old Celica Turbo in the past.

The test also shows Audi TT-RS pulling 0-130mph at 17s , faster than 1M.
Since it is not much lighter than 1M and the engine is smaller, I am guessing it is faster at higher speed because of the sustained boost.

Thoughts?

Wonder what the gearing / final ratios are on all three. Turbos can be tuned to a variety of applications, from busses, tractor and boats, to motorbikes and F1 motors. So its safe to speculate nearly anything when it comes to turbos, probably best to take a look at how they are implemented on the 1m and ttrs.

engine output should be the same...
kinda hard to understand why to vary boost pressure to car speed..

The Audi is also Quattro giving it amazing acceleration off the line, probably why it's so quick to 130.

You cannot begin to understand why until you consider gearing. The general saying is 'Its better to make tq at high rpm than at low rpm so you can take advantage of gearing'

Engine tq is also relatively meaningless. Its the wheel tq and wheel hp that matter because gearing matters.

I found this video on youtube where they are essentially drag racing the 1M vs E92 M3, E36 M3, and Z4M. And the race against the Z4M is almost a dead heat (Euro Z4M with CSL wheels and probably better tires than the stock Contis). Also, by the transitive property the Z4M spanks the E92 M3. =P (Too bad the video doesn't have subtitles).

I'd do some 0-130 if I had any traction in 1st gear

I can tell you by the end of that run the 1 series was pulling timing from increased IATs, despite what BMW may spoon feed people it's still not set up to do these sort of things. It's meant to give you a ton of torque to pass a mini van then settle down.

Engine load is much different in higher gears, that's just the first reason that comes to mind.

Gearing really has nothing to do with it. OEM gearing, which is never in an extreme direction like say a purpose built drag car, is not going to make much of a difference. In the end they are both going through the gears, not just sitting in one. Disadvantage turns to advantage and back again as they go through. The only way it's going to make a difference is if someone did something stupid and made a gear wayyy to long.

This idea a lot of people get where they look at the final drive and go, oh that car has a higher number it must be geared better is a fallacy. In the end even if the terminal speeds don't match up (like they do in this case) advantage will still bounce back and forth.
