Help: Thoughts/advice needed
On my way into work this morning I hit a rough spot in our lovely CA highways and bottomed out at highway speeds. Immediately after I noticed an apparent change in engine/exhaust sound coming from the passenger from portion of the car. I was able to continue driving, and made it to work a few miles later. If feels as if I may have lost some acceleration/torque, but this could also be because I was hesitant to push it after the sound change. I didn't notice change in exhaust smell.
When revving the engine with the car not in gear, the noise is still noticed, but not as apparent as when under load. ( I didn't have someone with me to rev while I was outside of the car) I've also noticed what feels like increased engine torque when revving and the car not in gear. A quick look under the hood doesn't reveal anything. Likewise, the exhaust components under the car, from what I can see, look intact. My initial thoughts are that it is something in the exhaust system I cannot see at present, or less likely I broke an engine mount. Any thoughts from the forum is appreciated. Specifically, your thoughts on what has happened, and if driving home (~15mi) is advisable. Thanks and will be in/out the next hr seeing patients.

Yeah that could be an engine mount or bolt, especially if it feels like the car is less responsive when you hit the gas. The fact that no codes popped up makes me think it's not related to anything else that is monitored by electronics (which is damn near everything)...

Yeah, the sound related to no load vs. load, says engine mount... unless you lost a nut on the exhaust manifold.
How violent was the bump? What part of the car hit when bottoming out? or did you just hit the shock bump stops? up front you may have scraped the plastic shroud, but under that is the thrust plate which offers protection for oil pan etc.

Thanks guys.
One dumb question, how would I know if I threw a code. I'm guessing I'd get a check engine light/or other warning when the car is on? (which is not the case) The bump was pretty hard, but I probably bottomed out the suspension and not the skid plate. I didn't hear any noise from under the car itself, but hard tell when things happen so fast. A look again at the car didn't reveal much more, Though I watched the engine when putting it under load and it did torque. Hard to say if it was more than normal however. Thoughts on driving in 8mi to a shop vs towing? Thanks!

I've replaced my motor mount bracket bolts with Motorsport bolts. Its not difficult for passenger side. Most difficult part is push the vano oil accumulator up out of the way. It doesn't looks like you can do it but need to angle it properly. The driver side is more difficult. I didn't remove air collector, but it is much easier if you do.
This thread have all parts needed. http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=635649 I recommend you get a tow home or shop to be on the safe side. |

Thanks Rob,
I'm having it towed to Bavarian Professionals in Berkeley where my soon to be wife has her car serviced. It's probably best to have them check it out to diagnose the problem and then go from there. I'd hate to get it home, throw it up, and find out it is something harder to fix than first anticipated... I'll keep you all posted on what transpires.

Confirmed, a few of the bolts for the engine bracket on the passenger side were missing leaving one viable bolt. when I hit the dip, that caused the bracket to break where the last remaining bolt was still attached. They were able to fix it without further problem, and replaced my cpv as well as it was leaking some oil. Total for parts and labor for both issues was $405.00 Could have been a hell of a lot worse!

Glad you had it sorted out and that it was a relatively simple fix. Did you upgrade to the Motorsport bolts?

Thanks, I was very pleased nothing more serious happened after loosing the bracket. I didn't go with the upgrade. Frankly, I was more concerned about getting it in and seeing if there was any serious damage. I may upgrade myself at a later date. At the very least, this will be something I check every time I'm under the car.

I am glad nothing got seriously damaged. This is a comon issue with our cars; definitely need to be checked from time to time (or just replaced with better hardware). Both sides were loosen and replaced under warranty around 22k miles.

Mine were only finger tight when I had them upgraded to the Motorsport bolts last year with only about 17k miles. It's a March build, which supposedly were the last batch of the badly torque bolts (according to the TSB)

I should have checked myself long before this occurred. It was a case of, oh that will never happen to me...The thing is, I had the car into the dealer last summer to check on an oil leak and I'm surprised that these weren't checked at that time. Maybe they were and they just loosened, but I doubt it.

Dealer replaced my bolts under warranty with the same bolts. No issue since the replacement. It was replaced around 30k and upgraded to Motorsport bolts when changing engine mount at 65k. It was nice and tight when I performed the upgraded bolts. You should not have problem, but upgrade the bolts for a piece of mind in the future.
