M COUPE rear strut mounts
Thankfully the replacement of the mounts on the M coupe is not as bad as you would think reading some of the other posts, The right rear can be accessed from the inside of the battery cover and the left by taking off a couple of pieces of trim around the window and then pulling back the carpet.
Took 1 hour and didn't even take off the rear wheels - would have gone with the ones that you can change from inside the wheel wells if this hadn't been so easy |

Clunk in rear when over little bumps - figured the rubber/silicone in the stock mounts had hardened up and was making the noise. I had done a lot of searches on this and other sites to find what would it be and that was the most common answer - rear shock mounts.
Now - can't see if it works till the snow is gone and if it still clunks I am SOL |

Will be interested in hearing the outcome. I've got a little clunk in the right rear now too.

Snow gone !!
SOL - easy change - supposedly better shock mounts but DID not fix the clunk on going over little bumps - not a metal to metal clink but a bimp bump like a rubber hammer hitting something - NO idea

Just asking....
Why did you choose those mounts when others like R.Eng etc make the shock mounts that are accessible from the bottom?

hockey tape
Dont think thats the problem now as the shock mounts I put in are not made the same. As far as these over the other type, no real reason except I put these on and didnt even take the wheels off
LAzy Now it may be any one of about 8 different suspension bushings I guess and everyone had different idea which ones - as it could be any of them I guess thats fair - some spay silicone on them to get rid of the clunck but all that would do is attract grit and wear them even more - I think if they are squeeking thats one thing --clunks would mean there is more movement and a bump at the end . Up on the stands wheels off again I see above there is reference to gaskets (extra) between the mounts and the body on both sides of the tower which would make sense - where would I get the gaskets > Looking for easy fixes first - taking the interior of the trunk apart is a PIA Last edited by drbvac; 04-24-2011 at 08:50 AM.. |

New developement !!!
Walking by the car,all wheels on the ground - put foot on top of right rear wheel and pushed in all my weight --- Clunk - Not supposed to do that - sounded as if the top 3 nuts on the wheel not tightened - but not the case so now I know it is a bearing that moves laterally with the wheel and is doing the clunk
Anyone know which that MAY be??? Considering this car has never seen snow or salt and has been rarely rained on - 2006 with 22,000 miles - should this bottom arm bushing look like this - its the rustiest busted up on the whole car - if this bushing is toast would the car make the clunk I described - OH by the way - it wont do it now on the grond and it doesnt make the noise when jacked up and the bushing is lowered or if the wheel is in a certain position on the ground - it may just be a fluke I got it to make the clunk yesterday !! So this clunking sound...
I just noticed this morning I've got a clunking sound coming from what *sounds* like the right front. reading through these, and other threads it's most likely the rear? Are there front mounts that I should check when I inspect these, if so what am I looking for?
EDIT: YIKES! found a thread that says it might be my motor mounts. I'm going to have a lot to do this weekend!

FOUND IT
Get under the car and have someone else move the wheel in and out and you will see the deflection and bump in the offender.
The one in the photos is the one thats going to be replaced and hopefully no clunks |
