Congrats. I was a little different. I have wanted a Zed since I saw one (z3 coupe) at the baseball fields when I was probably 10 or 12.
Oh, and the 3.0si is a very fun car to drive. The M has a much nicer looking front and a few smaller things like non electric steering and the better acceleration at higher rpm but I highly doubt you'll regret your si purchase!

adapt the throttle settings right off the bat, it will help. i think you just turn the key to the ignition setting for three seconds and than turn the key to the off position and done, if im not mistaken.... I keep forgetting to do it to my M but on my Si it made a difference.

congrats! I also hated the z4 when it debuted and I never thought I'd own a BMW! I have three in the garage now and also like you I traded my 997 in for my e85m
I actually love the n52 motor as it weighs less than an s54 by 100lbs! and the motor loves to rev w/ a lot more down low, and it doesn't need valve shimming every 30k mi. If this were my daily purchase I too would have chosen the SI you really cant go wrong with any BMW I6

Congrats, excellent color combo! The Z4 Coupe's unique look always get a lot of attention on the road.
What 911 do you currently have? I had a 1970 911T for a few years, which was a very fun car to own (except for fiddling with the carburetors all the time). I absolutely love BMWs, but every now and again I get the crazy idea of trading in my E86M for a 997S... |

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. The //M is a great car I'm sure but not the right car for what I needed. I drive 8 miles to work and back, mostly on local roads at the breakneck speed of 30 MPH. Sits at home all night and weekends and might do 1 big road trip in it per year. All the added costs that come with that little //M badge would be wasted for sure.

the coupe is a great car for daily driving fun when the kids and wife are at home. it's not expensive and not very high profile and just looks awkwardly nice... great choice.
it's a keeper.

It's always been a Fastback thing for me, whether GTs like DB9s, XK8 coupes, TVRs, or sportscars like the Z4C, Cheetah, Marcos, etc. Love fastbacks.

The Z4C was what brought me over to the BMW camp. I too, never really cared for BMWs before then. How that has changed!
That said, I don't think there's another car in the current BMW lineup that I'm all that interested in. At any given price point, there's another car that I'd rather own. |

Relating to the M variant with a Iron front heavy block. That's not the same issue with the S.I. however. So close on so many points. You'll have no regrets.......................... |

Congratulation! You made a good choice for a daily drive. The 3.0si will be a great engine for many of miles, and is very econmical ( mpg & service ). Get new tires if it has RFT. Great storey, thanks for sharing it, you're a lucky man to have a wife that lets you have both a 911 and Z4.

Grayz4, that's quite a story, and sounds like you found the right car for you, or perhaps the right car found you! What you went through I think a lot of folks can relate to as the "MiniVan/SUV Industrial Complex" seems hell-bent on convincing the driving public that if you're a parent and every car you have isn't one of these you're somehow failing as a parent (or aren't concerned with "safety"). Just like you found, most families really don't need two family trucksters. It's really cool that you (and your wife) reflected on the actual use of your vehicles and rethought things and ended up getting something that fit your needs. That car was meant for you! I've met several 3.0s on the track. Their owners had a grand time and the cars held their own--it's a wonderful machine.
I had a long and winding road to my Z4M as well (detour to a 07 Cayman S). Of course, as folks who have been around this forum know, if I'd listened to my wife in the first place I would have skipped the Cayman and bought a Z4M. (She has her own.) Huz, any Porsche engine that utilizes an intermediate shaft could experience issues with it. By 05 they'd made some improvements, but it wasn't until the new engines in the '10 911 and 09 Cayman/Boxster eliminated the IMS the issue was fully resolved which they ditched it and redesigned the engine. Oh, they also fixed the oil starvation + boom issue on the Gen I Cayman/Boxster as well. And yes, the 240-280 Zs do share a lot of the same design aspects! Then again, the Z follows the classic sports car design you can find in British and Italian sports cars from the 50s and 60s too....It's a classic and timeless design.
