Probably not your thing but when the 335i met its end we wanted to get something a little bigger and more comfortable. I was looking for something I could buy cash on the cheap so no where near $70k. Looked at some used X3s, Tiguans, X5s etc but they all felt rather cheap and didnt have the luxury feature I would want for this "cruiser". Anyways somehow I stumbled upon the Infiniti EX35 and fell in love with that. Got a great deal on a CPO with less than 30k miles. I really like it, not too big, not too small, very comfortable and decent power.

Chevy Volt

How about a Chevy Volt? 4 doors, 4 seats and hatchback so you can throw lots of stuff in the back. Lots of torque on the low end, fun to zip around in and doesn't send money to OPEC.

Sorry - I am about as far away from being a hippie as can be. The only electric car I would get is something from Tesla. They seem like the only dependable electric sports car manufacturer I know of right now.

I will never drive a Volt, Prius, etc. Just goes against my personal beliefs

heh, I like those comments! You wouldn't even consider something from BMW? The Volt drives nothing like a Prius and unlike a Tesla, it's got a gas engine similar to the up coming BMW i8 coupe or spyder. Anyway, unless the styling doesn't do it for you, I'd test drive it and see the almost instant torque. My buddy has one and still kept his Z4M coupe; I just got one too and of course, still love my Z4 roadster.

I'm watching my DVD set of Top Gear Season 18 at home these days, and in one episode, James May tests an electric car made my Fiskers (I think that's the name, and no, they don't make garden implements). EDIT - the Fisker Karma.

The car is SWEET to look at and its electric motor is MASSIVELY torquey, so it accelerates surprisingly fast. To be quite honest, if the future is full of electric cars like that, it won't be a bad thing IMHO.

My GF's co-worker's boyfriend was the lead designer for the Fiskar. I see them often running through Laguna Beach. Very cool and sexy car....if you like Aston Martin/Maserati type styling, that is.

For $70k you could probably afford a Tesla Model S, and it'll seat 7 for your growing family. =)

Fisker Karma.

Not bad for a four seater and all electric.

For those that haven't followed the latest auto news, this car has been recalled for a "minor defect"--the car has been catching on fire. You'd think for $100k they'd throw in a fire extinguisher or even have its own sprinkler system.

I actually looked at it pretty closely. It's gorgeous but completely impractical as it has a very small trunk.

Yeah, looks good but it's under recall now because of a faulty fan that catches fire! Anyway, it's not all electric like the Tesla Roadster. It's got an ICE range extender like the Volt and upcoming BMW i8.

I have looked at those as well. They are around/over $100K though right?

I have looked at those as well - tons of issues with the battery and electronics as of now. Definitely not going to take my chances with it.

They start at $50k and go up to $85k depending on the model you want. There might also be tax incentives in your state to help bring down the total cost.

And with the tax incentives you could get anywhere from $7500+ (federal) and $2500 (CA), $3500 (PA)..... in addition. So $50K minus ~$10k. But not sure about Iowa.

That is right, I was looking at the fast one last time I looked $97K. I learned after not getting the M not to do that again. I want to go all out next time! Although the fast one is available for $85K and with inscentives that is afully close to my price range. Good idea!
