Question about numbers
I attended my first Auto cross this Sunday and holy crap, I never knew how fun driving in any car could be!
I do have a question though about the numbers on the side of the cars people had. They seemed to be magnetic and they removed them from the car when the event was over. I tried searching on ebay but could not find in a search anywhere. Where can I order these numbers for my permanent number? |

Your right a lot of AX'ers use magnetic number panels. They'll work for AX speeds but are not advised for track duty as if not perfectly attached air will lift them off at speeds above 60-70mph.
However bad news for Z4 owners is magnetic numbers don't tend to adhere well to our doors. The bangled door's compound curves make it hard for the magnet to stick. I'm experimenting with heating the magnetic material to have it old the shape better but so far no luck. Vinyl sticks real well but is near impossible to remove & reapply. However there is a new re-usable vinyl which might work better, i've not yet tried. Lastly there is static cling material. If you'd like to get numbers look at solotime.com edecals.com Or trot down to any local vinyl shop they should be able to help out. HTH. |

My magnetic numbers from Soloperformance.com stayed on just fine for about 20 autocrosses last season....

Glad to hear you had fun, autoX is definitely a blast!
I'd recommend getting ones that are separate (i.e. get a 7, 0 and an 8 instead of 708) for two reasons: 1. They stay on better 2. You can reconfigure them if someone else happens to have your number

I use some rare earth magnets for work sometimes...if you have issues with the numbers staying applied, slap a few of those on the top/bottom of the number and I'll personally guarantee they'll go no where!
Can't wait for spring, plan to take the 3.0 for a few runs. Never did get around to auto crossing the E46, makes me sad.

I'm either cheap or inventive. Simplest thing to do is buy white drawer/shelf liner from Target or Walmart. Mine was made by Duck and it's officially called Peel & Stick Vinyl Covering ( http://duckbrand.com/Products/shelf-...px?IDH=1063853 )
Now you want to cut these into Segments. Otherwise known as seven segment display http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven-segment_display Once you have these segments, you can make any number. This vinyl laminate will stick and hold to your door well. I've done 135 at tracks with no problems. Three days later, it peels off with no residue. Some of the Porsche guys saw me doing this and loved the idea... I've seen it done in magnets, but same problems with flying off. |

Here's a DYI page I wrote up - http://p1software.com/solomags/solomags/
Since you are new, remember to find out if your club has any specifications about the size for numbers, class identification, etc. Last edited by kklin; 01-31-2012 at 09:58 PM.. |

After I arrive at the event site, I throw my numbers on the warm hood or roof to have them soften up a bit while I do other things.

Many of the Houston guys including myself got out magnets from Apexvinyl. Richard is here in Houston, and get you numbers quickly. Apexvinyl@gmail.com. He is also the guy who did the round champion magnets that people had on there car.
Glad to see you made it out to the event. I was in the black E36 M3 with the 181 magnets with the ///M colors behing it that was at the very end of the heat. Sorry I didn't get to introduce myself. Seeing the 3 M Coupes out made me miss mine even more.

uh get some magnetic numbers and be done with it. Literally google "magnetic autocross numbers." I feel like people here spend more time micromanaging their decisions about their car and analyzing their feelings towards their car than they spend with it.

For our road race events we use reusable vinyl. Works great just clean off the area and stick on the vinyl. We have used the same set for over a year.

Anyway, there is a layer of white vinyl under the blue vinyl, so on my second attempt I cut it out to show both colors by carefully scoring it through the paper template I made. It was very labor intensive, about 6 hours total including design, but the result is a hand made individual set

After losing one of my individual numbers at the track, I decided to get a magnetic sheet instead

I get my numbers from here: http://www.gochecker.com/
I've used both individual magnetic numbers as well as vinyl numbers with good results. I used my magnetic numbers last week at our new Ridge road course http://www.ridgemotorsportspark.com/ and they didn't come off at 135 MPH down the front straight
