z4 m - Navigation and ipod/iphone integration

Does anyone know if there is a mod available that will allow the ipod music to display on the OEM navigation (song title, artist, playlists, etc) screen? I realize there is an Auxillary port available...but is there an iPod integration w/the stock Nav system like there is w/the e9x 3-series, 5-series, etc (w/iDrive)?

Sounds like your looking for the Intravee II / Alpine KCA-420i solution. Pricey, but works great.

Does the OEM unit display playlists? How is the response time? I'm very close to getting it installed. Should I back away and get Intravee instead? What's the difference?

Cool...where did you get the "kit"? Was it from your local BMW dealer (OEM part)?

please ignore my last post...it was targeted to the wrong poster. Raypeter - where did you get your "kit"? Was it an OEM part(s) that you picked up at your local BMW dealer?

Get the Intravii. The OEM BWM adapter (like most other things OEM) is more expensive and less functional. If you want something cheaper than Intravii (with less features) get the Dice unit.

Had the OEM unit. It works, but it's uninspired at best. You have to name your playlists just right and you can only get access to 5 of them (6th is "everything"). The intravee does have its limitations with gigantic music libraries. If you have a 30gb+ ipod and it's full, you're likely to surpass it's ability to enumerate artists or songs. I think the limit is 511 items in any given view (with 512th being "back"). If your music is well organized, it's obviously not going to be a problem though. Intravee allows you to do much better random play, has full "now playing" display, and even allows you to customize what the buttons on the dash do while you're in ipod mode.

Jimbojsb,

Thanks. Does the OEM unit have good response times? Does it display song names and other info at the same time? I guess I don't really see all the differences vs intravee.

TBH, I don't remember if it displays the song names, I think it did. Just as an FYI, you can't actually use the controls on the ipod with either solution, they lock out the screen on the device itself. With the OEM, you're limited to "everything" or playing 1 of 5 playlists. Intravee replicates most of the basic ipod menus on the nav screen. The response on the OEM is acceptable, about the same as the intravee. They are both CD Changer emulators, so there is some protocal-muxing going on there in the adapter, but overall, response is good on both.

Other:
The OEM unit is designed to have the wire come out in the glove box, the intravee most people have mounted behind the carpet in the trunk with the ipod in the storage compartment or similar.

Neither work particularly well with the iphone, however, the OEM one is more likely to be tricked into playing something like pandora on the iphone than the intravee. Neither charge the iphone (and potentially newer ipods that use the iphone voltages)

Great information! thank you all very much.

Anyone know how difficult the install is for the OEM solution? Or, what the dealer will charge for this if you have them do it? Also, what does the OEM part go for?

What's the Intravee cost?

Yesterday the dealer quoted me $850 for the OEM unit, installed.

I believe Bimmernav is the authorized dealer in US: http://www.bimmernav.com/store/catal...-item-166.html

$250 for the unit and ~$100 for the Alpine adaptor. I have seen the combo go for ~$200 used on ebay and on BMW forums. You can also get the OEM unit for the same price ($200-300) used on eBay or eBay.de if you absolutely prefer OEM (which it seems you do) and don't mind sacrificing functionality.

I installed the OEM solution myself in my Coupe. It's not difficult, only took about an hour or so. The hardest part was dealing with the little grommet they use to pass the cable through to the glovebox. I've since bought a specdock interface and now my iPod mount is where my ashtray use to be.

The OEM unit works fine and does display artist.title information, but as others have said you are limited to 5 playlists BMW1-BMW5, but at $150 versus the almost $400 for the intravee, it seemed a fair trade off.

Here's a link to a thread on bimmerfest which has the installation instructions and a lot of dialog around the OEM interface http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=297113

Also, here is a link to the specdock which is just a plain cool mount for the ipod in the Z4. http://www.specdock.com also, the specdock does have an adaptor option which will allow it to charge newer ipods/iphones. If you don't already have an interface, I believe you can bundle a dice or similar with the specdock when you order it.

I gave my OEM to a friend, who was successful in installing it, and I removed mine myself. The hardest part of installing would be figuring getting the wire into the glovebox properly. The unit itself required that you re-wire some pins on the factory wiring harness, but if you're handy, it's not too much hassle, and is generally plug-and-play. There's a bimmerfest post somewhere with the details. Mine wasn't really mounted, just kind of layed inside the dash.

I also installed my intravee, and I will be honest, it wasn't easy, and i have installed many fully custom car stereos. I drive a Z4MR, and the trunk is very tight, and it's a bit difficult to get the trunk carpet out to a point where you can actually get to the CD changer wires in the trunk. I also spent a great deal of time fiddling with it before I realized I'd have to completely remove the OEM unit before I could use the intravee (my dumb fault), because of the wiring harness "hack" that it uses. Plan on alot of blind feeling, poking, pulling, etc in order to get it done and mounted somewhat securely. My ipod connector goes through a hole i cut in the CD changer blank and my ipod is velcro'd to my console door. (see my other recent post on this). If you can get the trunk carpet conquered, the install is trivial. In a coupe or non-M, this would be -much- easier.

Thanks for the great links and information. This is a mod I want to do for my wife's ///M, and I'd be totally lost (or buying the wrong thing) without the knowledge here.

I have a Z4M with a NAV system and the BMW Sirius unit attached. It displays information in the left half of the screen just fine. Currently the Sirius module is connected to the CD changer cable connections and has a pass-thru port for adding a changer if you so desire. The DICE unit will connect, play, and display its limited amount of data through this pass-thru port. A Dension device made for a BMW will connect and play but will not pass the screen data through to the LCD. Does anyone know if you connect the Intravee this way will it work and display data? Or do you lose the Sirius connectivity by installing an Intravee?
