Breaking in the MPerf LSD

Hi all -

My car's in the shop right now getting fitted with the MPerformance LSD. I've seen some posts that indicate a break-in procedure is needed for these. I've been unable to find anything on the sites that sell this LSD to confirm this. Anyone have a manual or instructions or something like that with the break-in procedure?

Thanks!

Congrats on the LSD addition!

Here is the process I went through--

Upon install the technician should do the following:

"Break in/Servicing differential:
Upon differential installation, and fluid top off, proceed to drive vehicle to a controlled area where several circles/figure eights can be performed. Drive vehicle (at idle speed) in 20 figure eights, full lock to full lock. Then drive (at idle speed) in 20 full lock circles left, 20 full lock circles right."

Then light to medium driving for 1200 miles. At 1200 miles get the diff fluid changed out. After that go nuts.

There are other perspectives out there on what is really required but I went on the conservative side and did all the above.

Thanks! That's probably what I'll do. Where did you find that procedure? (Or is just something of a standard procedure for a new diff?)

When I saw your post yesterday I googled "M performance LSD break in procedure" to jog my memory and I found a forum post from a few years back. It is the standard M Performance LSD procedure. You could also call a BMW dealer and ask a service advisor to check documentations for the LSD.

I did the figure 8s but never changed the fluid. My tech didn't see that it was necessary nor a requirement. I installed my MP LSD about 6 years and 60K miles ago. Still works just fine.

Thanks to both of you.

A big part of why I went with this is your posts on it, JMcLellan.

That's awesome! The feedback from other forum members is why I did it too. Enjoy the new LSD!
