Nail in my front right tire

Back in November I replaced all 4 tires (Bridgestone Alenza Sport A/S RFT 285/45R21) on my 2021 X7 40i.

Travelled 3100 miles, then got the dreaded “check tire pressure” warning yesterday.

Giant nail in the center of the front right tire tread.😢

Luckily, I bought the 4 tires on Tire Rack so they have a 2 year road hazard warranty.

So here’s my question- am I safe replacing just the front right tire? Or is my tire shop going to require I replace both front tires to prevent having any issues with the XDrive/transfer case? I only drove 3100 miles on these tires so there’s barely any ware (especially very little ware on the fronts).

The replacement tire is $499 plus tax on Tire rack (covered by warranty) but I’d really like to avoid having to replace both fronts, which of course would cost me the equivalent of 1 tire to replace.

Did you measure tread? As long as they are relatively close you're good.

I'm thinking with only 3100 miles on them, and them being front tires, you're likely fine.

It depends on the remaining tire tread. Based on you having a lot remaining you should be okay to change only the damaged tire. I recently changed a front tire with about double your tire mileage and the other front tire had plenty left.

Also for many nails the shop may be able to remove it, patch the hole, and have you to continue to use the tire.

True. Op could get the free tire, and continue using the old one with a patch since a nail hole is very small and doesn't structurally compromise the tire.

maybe check if there is an agreement to see what it reads if they force replacement due to another tire. Maybe covered also or no.

Both front tires have about 8/32 tread left.
Not sure how much tread a new one has but I’ll find out when the new tire arrives in 2 days.
Hopefully I’ll be okay replacing just one of them.

Unfortunately, they won’t patch a run flat tire. Boooo.

New tires usually have between 9/32 to 11/32 tread (varies by model).

Most dealers and many large tire chains won't patch a run flat. The smaller independent tire shops have no issue patching a run flat. They can be patched and used as long as the damage isn't near the side walls and you haven't driven on a "flat" tire for more then a couple miles.

Tire Rack will also 'wear" or shave the tire down to the tread depth of the other tires if you are really concerned. Just have to ask them.

For what it’s worth

I chatted with Discount Tire and they will not match free road hazard warranty like tire rack even though they merged. The DT road hazard for 4 Michelins sport as 4 was around $320

That being said I think I will buy from tire rack and take to discount tire to install

I have done all tire business with DT since 2007

This has been the opposite of my experience. Usually they reduce the price of the tire to compensate for the road hazard.

New tire arrived today from Tire Rack.

New Bridgestone Alenza Sport A/S RFT tread depth: 9/32

Old Front Bridgestone Alenza front tires tread depth (3100 miles) - both: 8/32

I think I’ll just install the ONE new front tire. The difference between the old tire and the new tire is literally less than 0.8mm of tread depth so I think I’ll be fine.

Car makers have different standards, but 1/32 is ok by any standard.

Unfortunately, I live in downtown San Francisco where there is construction at all times, it seems. I've had my X7 for about 3 years now and i think i patched mine about 3 times, my wife has different BMW with run flats and she patched hers about the same. I've never heard RF cannot be patched. the same restriction applies (sidewall, too close to the side, etc.) though.
