"The iDrive 8 is a step up from the old system... I don't like the new iDrive. It's a step backwards!"

Yeah, this review--and others--are making me seriously reconsider my plan to wait for the LCI M3. I wish there would be a way to know whether the disappearing buttons will be a corporate-wide design theme, or whether that's primarily for the i-series...

The i4/iX dashboard design is supposed to move to other models when they're updated, so there's a real risk of that. It is emphatically not an EV thing.

Same here. Unfortunately by the time an M3 is in the cards for me, I think it may be the LCI and the new iDrive/lack of buttons are something that I'm deathly afraid of.

Three things kill it for me. Top Speed, range, and weight.

I'm also not a fan of the hexagonal speedo/tach virtual gauges, though in that arena it's more possible an ICE engine/M car would have additional, more sport-oriented "gauges." Though honestly I'd be happy with a digital rendition of classic BMW circular round analog gauges.

iDrive 8 is going to be a big joke considering that touch panel's are currently being removed from high margin cars such as M3/M4 and X7. Does BMW AG believe that loyal customer are taking them seriously regarding EV? Outside of Cali and the NE, EV is DOA. Quick charge time is still a joke at 30 min, as the charge time will have to get to below 15 min to have any traction for customers to consider especially who live in in areas with limited EV charge stations off of the US interstate roads.

As I pointed out Haywood your located on Long Island NY, which has very high gas prices. EV's fit in there, perfect for the Americana. Head over to the M forums and EV support is the minority. How many units is BMW NA selling to be sold out? If production is limited, then very easy to sell out when units are restricted to be sold. Very easy to sell out to the early movers, but getting the masses to accept will be a very big challenge. This why BMW is running a Super Bowl ad this weekend.

I'm a dyed in the wool BMW fan and have owned multiple M cars. I still have an X5 and a 2003 Mini Cooper S. But I have owned/leased a Fiat 500e, Chevy Bolt and a little over a year ago I bought a 2020 Chevy Bolt. The I4 M50 will be the 4th EV that has been a resident of my L2 charger. I look forward to getting my Fisker Ocean at the end of this year or early next. We shall see if the masses buy them. The masses sure don't have an issue buying TM3. This car is an overall better car at roughly the same price point.

The numbers will soon tell, I don't believe anyone in the US has one yet, but current demand absolutely exceeded BMW's expectations.
I predict 50/50 split in the US, and 70/30 split around the world since they seem more apparent to accept BEV's like the UK, Norway, NL, China etc etc.. Ibiza, I know what you mean. I wanted to do a performance delivery, but the charging stations in SC is...3rd world. There are only a handful on my drive through SC into FL, but I think my range anxiety has the best of me since it will likely make it to FL without a charge, but what's the fun in that if I can't go all out and do a few dragy runs right away? Also, yes the i4 M50 talk is small on M forums. I am one of the M-guys who is converting (E46/E90 M3, now F82 M4cs).

does that make it a failure and a bad car? For my part, I am a BMW enthusiast and for a grocery getter this I4 M50i has nothing to envy to any other vehicle. |

Except for the instant throttle that will leave a stock X3 M40, or 2019 M4 in any normal street acceleration encounter. All while averaging close to 100mpge.

I think the idea that people don't want electric cars is the equivalent of an urban myth. I do agree that we need more fast charging public outlets. Hopefully, they are coming. |

Top speed 140mph, unless you live in Germany you will be losing your license well below this speed so I don’t fully understand when people complain about this sort of thing.
Range I do kind of get especially if you live in a vast country where journeys could leave you will range anxiety. Weight, this is unfortunately a side effect of electric cars and until either battery performance improves to extend range or charging time drops dramatically that leads to not needing a load of batteries I can’t see anyway round this problem. The only plus is the weight is extremely low so compared to a regular 4 series this will actually corner way flatter. |
