For anyone wondering about size of i4 M50 battery pack - pics

For anyone wondering how large the i4 M50 battery pack is.

Consists of 3 single cell modules and 4 dual cell modules.

Nothing about working on this battery unit is quick. Considering it's 1260lbs and requires a crane to remove the dual cell modules and center section with 2 single cell modules.

Not sure who would be doing those upgrades or what those upgrades would consist of.

One possibility would be a new battery technology that has double the power density, so you could have half the weight with the same range, or double the range with the same weight. Solid-state lithium batteries can do that, maybe even better. They're not that many years away.

The funny thing is these pictures show that the tunnel area is used. So for all the complaints about the tunnel; that stuff needs to go somewhere.
Without a tunnel the battery pack is thicker and floor is higher or ride height is, or both.

That is true. Tunnel is still utilized. Just like on the Mini Cooper electric vehicle.

That whole argument is silly, CLAR platform was designed to accommodate both ICE and electric versions of the 4 series. It's not a "gas platform converted to electric". The tunnel is not an afterthought, it was part of their hybrid platform design.

I agree. It's just funny that the tunnel is being used and that stuff has to be somewhere. If not the tunnel then where?

On my Tesla its under the rear seat. BMW just put it somewhere convenient for them.

What was the issue with these cells? Does BMW take the defect packs, or does the dealership dispose?

As stated in the recall, potential manufacturing defect. Cells are returned to BMW NA.

If you do a search on YouTube there are a number of them covering i4 manufacturing and pack assembly. I’m not sure a hot swap is in the 15 minutes that Renault and Citroen are aiming for - though with careful design it should be possible one day. Just think of the size of warehouses required to store the multitude of variations used.

Business opportunity for some enterprising mind though…..

Fresh, thanks for sharing. Is this you working on the i4 at your store? Are seeing a lot issues with these cars? I picked up an M50 last month. You ready to unload the X3 yet and go EV??

You are correct. This is me working on this i4. I am certified for Gen 5 HV battery and drivetrain repairs. Haven’t seen any issues yet, just normal things like charge doors getting stuck.
I am ready to add an Individual i4 M50 to the stable once we get a good employee incentive. As soon as it opens up I’m placing an order.

Great photos. Very difficult to appreciate the battery size and weight unless someone actually takes the time to take these photos.

I will wait until BMW offers solid state battery technology in its EVs.

1500 lb battery pack. It’s no joke.
