Trying to figure out transmission options
I'm looking to buy a used Z4 with an SMG transmission due to the fact my wife can't drive stick and we will be sharing the car. The SMG transmission seems to be the best compromise.
AFAIK, the last year they offered the SMG transmission was in 2005. Everything since then seems to be Manual or Auto/Septronic or Auto/Steptronic with paddle shifters. I've seen a couple 06's that state they have SMG transmission (because they have paddle shifter) but I suspect it's just a regular Automatic/Steptronic transmission. Hopefully someone can clarify for me. |

SMG was discontinued after '05; you were correct. Whoever told you '06 Z4's have SMG's is clueless; those are just steptronic with paddle shifters.

Thanks for the reply.
One other question. Was there any difference between the Automatic transmissions in the 05 vs 06? It seems like a have a toss up of going with an 05 with 225HP and an SMG transmission or an 06 with 255HP and a steptronic. Not to sure what would be more fun. |
