Convertible Top Side Covers

Do you guys think there would be any interest in CF convertible Top Side Covers? Someone on the Z4 FB page mentioned getting a set of these so he can reproduce them. The guy has since disappeared. I'd like to look into making sets of them in CF if there was any interest.

I think the material of which the future reproductions would be made of is not that important. However, It would be a big thing for the z4 roadster community if someone would start a reproduction...

The small parts are already in sale by a german z4 driver in the german forum.

I think this is a perfect piece to be 3D printed. Not too complex a shape and relatively small.

Lol we don't really need cf for a piece like that. With that said, a reproduction of this would be amazing.

If it were covered in the same material as the soft top that would make it even better. It'd blend in perfectly.

I mentioned this in another thread with the same idea, I would have concerns over a CF replica for the simple fact that these can't be used when the top is raised.

I had a set of these with my roadster and I lost count how many times I raised the top forgetting the covers were in place. Because of the soft-touch, flexible material, they simple fell out onto the ground without a mark. If they were made of CF, I'd be worried they would either crack or become damaged if the top were raised (by the flex or when they hit the ground), or damaged the paint if they bounced off.

One could always have them covered in black leather, matching interior leather or just go with alcantara.

If this comes to fruition I would be down for a set. Carbon fiber would be cool.

Never thought about how sweet they would be leather covered, especially with those who are lucky enough to have the extended leather with leather wrapped roll hoop covers.

If they happen get a set and have an upholstery shop cover them in whatever material you choose.

Leather or alcantara in your color of choice. You could go black leather or alcantara with a contrast stitch that matches the exterior color of your car or the seats!

I have access to a 3D printer at my local library that prints PLA in black or red. I just need to upload a file in STL, 3MF, OBJ, or AMF format.

I am shocked that no one has 3D printed these given the absurd asking price (there was a set recently advertised for sale at $350+).

Look at what just popped up on the ZSCCA?

A company has agreed to 3D print a set and with possible manufacturer! FYI, no word on pricing yet.

I'm guessing the price will come in around $400-$600 per piece based on what I've paid before for 3D printed parts for prototype units.

That's not a good number at all.

A friend of mine has a set and would offer it for a fair price to someone who might produce copies for the z4-community...

PN if someone is interested!

Convertible Top Cover

It looks like BMW part# 54340154306 may still be available, but I'm not able to find verification that it will fit a 2008 Z4M. Any insight would be very appreciated. Also, BMW PARTS WAREHOUSE, the supposed supplier, just had my email to Support returned undelivered, and there was no answer at their phone number. Oh, my.

These things are essentially rocking horse poop. They are virtually impossible to find, although people do sell theirs from time to time.

For some reason they do or did show availability in Germany, but guys have been refunded the purchase price when they are told by the parts department they attempted to purchase don't actually exist. They really should be NLA (No Longer Available).

I will say you do have to be real quick when a set does actually come up for sale with two things:

1) typing a PM to tell the seller you want them, and badly I must say, and then

2) have your form of payment ready to go for whatever he's asking for them.

I have a set of these and planned to make some copies, however, I found that MOST of the 3D printers are too small to handle the size of these covers. Meaning, I would need to take it to a commercial printer, which increases the cost 10 fold. I have no problem making copies when the tech catches up and the average guy can make em' in my city (Nashville).
