It appears they did. What's the excuse for the last 3.5 years? The economy was so hot.

What's the consensus on why Michigan was hit hard? Not a huge population, doesn't have too much density, and not really a huge travel hub.

I can't defend trump here. Just pointing out that Obama (not just Trump) both dropped the ball.

Oh, three major automakers and their tier one suppliers, all global companies? Might be something in that, no?

Not just Obama, but I posit even our larger society as a whole (myself included). I think pre-COVID-19, there was a pervading sense of complacency and invincibility that these viruses (MERS, SARS, Ebola) were third-world (or less developed nations) diseases. Sure there was the seasonal flu, but everyone got the flu, and no one we really knew died from the flu.

And all it took was a virus with a 1% mortality rate to bring this country to its knees in a span of a mere 2 months, at the height of one of the greatest bull markets in US history.

Itís not the mortality rate. Itís the hospitalization rate.

Numbers from Italy. Median age of those who died was 80 with 50% having at least 3 or more comorbidities. Numbers from 3 weeks ago: average age of positively-tested deceased is +/-81 years. 10% of the deceased are over 90 years old. 90% of the deceased are over 70 years old.

That makes sense, I was looking for any types of festivals or similar that they may of had. The only thing that I could find is the primaries they had on March 10th. Possible that everyone standing in lines to vote caused a big issue.

States that had gone ahead with primaries in March were stupid. I wonder what effect this will have on the election in November? Absentee ballot for me...

Imagine if we had a robust electronic system. This is like the one legit application for public blockchain outside of currency.

Sometimes you just get unlucky, too. From the nextstrain data, it looks like somehow NYC avoided large numbers of early infection from Chinese travelers only to import large numbers of infected people from Europe.

That's quite a disparity between men and women.

India is amazing in some aspects and terrible in others.

When I was reading about the recent Ebola outbreaks when they happened I was just in awe of the heroism that the medical workers showed. I like to consider myself a decent person, but there is no way I could see myself flying to Africa to treat Ebola in places with no infrastructure while under-equipped and in constant danger of being attacked by militias or paranoid locals.

Yeah, this virus definitely hits men harder. It's not the only virus that does that. The first thing that comes to mind is testosterone, but I had read a paper years ago that talked about this effect in another virus (forget which). They concluded that it was more likely to be lower estrogen in males and that the higher levels of estrogen in women were protective.

Birth control pills for men?

I'd deal with moobs in exchange for not dying.

Who knows what the cause is in this particular disease, though. Could be cardiac-related. Women have lower levels of heart disease than men of the same age and there appears to be cardiac involvement in some cases as well as increased mortality with hypertension.

Actually goes back to Bush. Pretty much all recent administrations fell down on prepping for what seemed like an existential threat.
