DSP Amplifier replacement

Dear all,

My first post here, I am thrilled to be part of this community, having fulfilled my dream of an e85 Z4 with the 3.0 l Engine.

I am looking forward to exchanging knowledge with you and grateful for the existence of this forum!

My original setup is the Business Headunit, with the Navigation System and the DSP Amplifier.

Since my amplifier with the Number 65.1269.63304 HW03 SW02 had a water damage I bought a new one, with the Number 65.126974231 HW 04 /SW02

Now there's absolutely no sound coming out of any of the boxes..

Any ideas? Do I need to have the amplifier coded ?

Insert the last 7 digits of your VIN into ...Realoem.com ... to get the proper parts diagram/parts number for your car.

Compare your prior amp part number to the listings for amps to confirm that it is showing up... then compare the amp you bought/installed is listed as a replacement amp...

If it's not listed that is your problem.

Exclamation

Thanks for the input,

I agree that seems to be the issue given my replacement amp is made for the e86 FL Model and not my e85.

My previous amp has the Number 65.1269.63304 HW 03 SW 02, the new one has Nr. 65.126974231 with HW 04 SW 02.
The new one is brand new, so not even coded for any type.

I have NCS Experrt and connected to my car. Trying to read our DSP there were some errors and no fsw.psw.man File was generated.

The NCS errors were COAPI-2020 "SG antwortet nicht" and IFH-0009 "No response from Control Unit"

Question:
Assuming the "Control Unit" of the DSP is integrated, I believe I have to upload the corresponding Files.
I have a .c02 Datei of the E86 and the SP Daten of the E85, .c01 and .c02.

How should I proceed? I read I might have to use tools32 to Flash itdue to the newer version (65.126974231 is for the E86).

Assuming it is already in a cleaned state - which might be the reason of the control unit not sending a response, how should I upload the right files to the Amp?

Anybody got experience on that?

Best Regards from Switzerland
Alex

Been a number of years since I played with recoding of my amp after getting a new one...

I used NCS Dummy to down load the files on the car... and then uploaded those files to code my replacement amp. You really need to read the documentation on NCS Dummy to see what you need to do.

I would put the old amp in and see if you can down load the old amp configuration...

Hi Clearancedriver, thanks for the reply!

That is the solution trajectory I am following.

I have a fsw_psw File for coding the unit with NCS Expert, taken out from an E86 however the underlzing issue seems to be that I cannot communicate with the Amplifier.

I have NCS Expert and INPA and connected to my car. While trying to read out the DSP Control Unit there were errors displayed.
In NCS Expert there was shown "COAPI-2020: SG Antwortet nicht" and "IFH-0009: No Response from control Unit"
Accordingly no fsw.psw.man File was generated.
Also the same error messages apperared when I tried to "code" with the fsw_psw available to me.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

Assuming it is already in a "cleaned state" - which might be the reason of the control unit not sending a response, how can I make the Amp communicate with the program to enable the "coding"?

Do I have to use tools32 to "Flash it" due to the newer version (65.126974231 is for the E86), if so, how is that done?

Clearancediver did you somehow "flash" it before coding it?

Very much appreciate your help

Not sure I can help you.

I'd first connect with INPA/INSTA D to read/diagnose any issues with the car. Once that is done....

Use NCS Dummy... not NCS Expert to read/copy amp settings(file) from the connected "old" amp that you have connected to the wiring harness. You will need to read up on how to use it.

Using NCS Dummy you read/save that file on your computer for future use etc. you make any changes you need to the file you want/need to do. If you have been given a file for the amp instead use that file if that is your preference.

You then up load that file with the proper file name to the new amp you have connected to the amp wiring harness.

As I said... use NCS Dummy and read the documentation on it to learn how to download/upload files....

Here is a link for you.... https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.car-...tallation/amp/

Read first before you go any further....

Solved - dsp amplifier replacement

SOLVED!

Here my recommended steps in the case of DSP Amplifier Water damage, as learned by trial and error.

1-Run NCS Expert to read coding data "Codierdaten auszulesen". In case of COAPI-2020 and / or IFH-009 your amp isn't getting any power and cannot be coded

2-Check the fuse Box behind the Glove Box - Nr. 47-50 should be for DSP, however this is the more unlikely one

3-ALSO CHECK the Fuses (MIDI-Screw-in Fuse) in the Batterie compartment, with the Multimeter. Of course take out the Battery first - completely, you will have to take apart the fuse box too!
Now, there is a 40A Fuse and a 250A Fuse in here. The 40 A Fuse secures the Amp and is likely killed in case of water damage.

4-Rewire the above, install amp."DSP" is shown as an option in the Screen of your CIC.

5-Code the Amp with NCS Expert , use the extracted FSW_PSW.MAN File from another E85 or E86

I initially failed at step 3, as did MY BMW DEALER!

What I learned in addition.

1- The DSP amps seem to be upwards-compatible. See the numbers below:

Before 11/2002
65 12 6 923 900
65 12 6 930 046

After 11/2002
65 12 6 932 417
65 12 6 936 087
65 12 6 936 952
65 12 6 938 189
65 12 6 946 727
65 12 6 963 304 (my old one )

After 01/2006
65 12 6 974 231 (my new one)
65 12 9 125 751
65 12 9 138 102

HW / SW Version does not seem to play a role.

2- It is possible NCS Expert tries to communicate with the wring module. There are
DSP_E85.C01
DSP_E85.C02
DSP_GAE.C01

To instruct NCS Expert to read out the other ones
File -> Edit profile -> password = repxet -> SGET-Data -> tick checkbox Enter SGET data.
Then read out DSP module->new popup window, "Enter SGET data". Change the "CDB" Field to one of the others to read it out. In my case this worked automatically with NCS reading out .C02 Datei by itself.

Questions:
Does anyone have an idea on how to insulate the Battery box and the amp so this doesn´t happen again in case of Water Damage?

Best Regards
Alex

Well done Alex.

Not sure how you would seal the battery well and likely not a good idea honestly.
I solved the water issue by drilling a hole in each corner of the battery well on the lowest points to allow any water that gathers to drain out.
Also make sure the convertible top drains are not plugged with leaves and debris. This is the most common reason for the amp to get wet, due to rainwater backing up and running back into the trunk.
