I really liked the storm works V1.

http://www.storm-motorwerks.com/inte...hift_knobs_v1/

17.6oz.. makes the shifting so much better.. ZHP knob that everyone love is too light at 8.6oz in my opinion to make much difference.

I've since switched to a chassis mount race shifter though..

I still have that V1 shifter just in case.

I'll second that. I gave myself one of their V4 knobs (stainless w/ black leather) for Christmas and it really smoothed out the shifting. Didn't weigh it but it felt like it was 3x heavier than my stock knob.

I'm not sure how much heavier (maybe an oz?) that shifter is compared to stock. That looks like a decent replacement if the stock knob is falling apart (very close to stock look) but I don't think you'll notice any difference in shifting.

Adding weight definitely makes the M transmissions shift better, especially 1st to 2nd.

My M Coupe came with a UUC RK6A shift knob when I bought it. It's probably the heaviest shift knob on the market at 24 oz. I thought it shifted very well, especially compared to the stock shift knob. I wanted a more OEM look so I switched to the illuminated shift knob from the F10 M5.

1st to 2nd is a little clunkier with the M5 knob than it was with the UUC, but I'm finding 3rd to 2nd downshifts are smoother with the M5 knob.

Ultimately I would go with what style and material you prefer that adds weight. Aluminum is not friendly to your hands on a sunny day, especially with a roadster!

^^ that M5 knob with original boot looks so odd with no seams on the rear portion. Not bad, just.. different.

My car came with either an illuminated ZHP knob, or the same M5 knob - hard for me to tell, they're so similar. Also had a LeatherZ boot with M-colored stitching. Talk about a couple of nice accessories to inherit - exactly what I would have done to it myself.

It was weird at first, but the M5 leather is much nicer than a stock Z4 shift boot so I got used to it quickly. If LeatherZ still had the regular leather boot with M stitching, I would probably pick one up. The alcantara boot just looked out of place without a matching steering wheel.

I can't say I quite understand the metal knobs. Looks like a nice way to get a second degree burn in the summertime. Do you all drop something over them when you park in the sun?

I went with the M5 lighted knob and boot. Feels great, nicer leather boot and the lighted shifter is brighter than the stock one.

never been a problem(I'm in Fl ,tinted windows). if it sat outside all day in direct sun, then i guess it might be.

Functionally I see only negatives to metal and every other surface in the car that I touch regularly comes with some material besides metal that functions better. Leather seems for better suited for function. Is metal purely for looks?

Found the perfect solution, custom weighted knob for style, and better "Feeling" gear changes. Throw a pair of these on if your leaving it outside for an extended period of time with the top down

I would say mostly. I have a shift knob from bimmian and it's comfortable and never looks worn or dirty. I feel like i'm always cleaning leather to get rid of the shine, whereas with the aluminum you can pretty much clean it with anything. Plus if you close your eyes you can pretend it's a Ferrari shift knob

I'm definitely going to second this. Momo is an often forgotten brand that still makes some really high quality products for fair prices. Loads of selection. Check out the Momo Targa Knob

I am a big fan of Raceseng shift knobs (I had one on my GT350 and now Z4M). Metal with a Delrin sleeve (no burns) and comes in at 1.04 lbs. (470 grams). It looks close enough to a factory-type look that no one notices it unless I point it out. It also has plenty of options for customization.

I don't like to stray too far from OEM. The ZHP or late M5 knob retains the look while shortening up considerably from stock and adding a bit of weight. And I inherited this super-nice LeatherZ boot when I acquired this car. Perfection for me.
