Metal window trim hazing problem. Coupe

On my 08 coupe I have noticed that the black trim above the windows is fading and oxidized. It almost looks like a white haze from car wax. I tried rubbing it out the other day but the haze/fading comes right back. Any tips? Also the rubber piece between the rear 1/4 window and the front door is also faded and spotty. Really looks like crap. Anyone else have this problem on their coupe as the roadsters do not have these trim pieces? Replacement looks very difficult.

had the same problem on the smart car and had them paint the plastic to proper gloss level on the back and looks factory fresh and best of all UV resistant and will last.

not to bad either, was cheaper than replacing the parts

they can ajust the gloss level also so you can do very shiney or matt or whatever you desire.

I've just finished by exterior detail before getting the car out for spring, and I've got positive (though it may be temporary) results by hitting the trim above the windows (and most of the exterior rubber and gaskets with Griot's Rubber Prep and then their "Long Lasting" tire and rubber dressing.

txz4 had mentioned using mother's back-to-black on his trim with excellent results, http://www.mothers.com/02_products/06108.html. it's readily available at local auto stores for about $6.

I've used back to black and it helps. Unfortunately, it won't reverse any damage.

If you have wax residue on black plastic trim, it can be a bear to remove. What has worked for me (believe it or not) is to use peanut butter to remove it. The oils disolve the wax and it really works. If your discoloration is not due to wax, consider this tip for future use.

I'll try that. That could be the issue.

The issue is the plastic materials that BMW uses for these rubber gaskets. It is UV that is damaging the rubber.

Not sure about the painting options, but I know that in general UV is a problem.

This is a persistent problem on Z4's and I have discussed with a dealer who advised they always have customers complaining a couple years into ownership. According to the stealer, BMW uses "green" products which is why these deteriorate quicker. I think that's a load of

Had the same problem with the rubber trim around the windshield and it had becomed cracked. Took it to BMW dealer and the replaced it under waranty! You might want to try that if it is starting to deteriorate.

I had cracking/discoloration on the windshield. They replaced it. I had only discoloration on the side windows, they said its oxidization and can be cleaned off.

I also had terrible cracking on the seal around the windshield. BMW replaced it under warranty, but I have no doubt it will be back soon enough. Anybody have any ideas on how to try and preserve it for more than 3 years?

I'm thinking of replacing the faded black metal trim at the top of my driver & passenger side windows. I've confirmed that it's not wax. The black paint has oxidized.

Can anyone confirm that piece #14 on RealOEM indicates the correct part to order? Anyone removed and re-installed these before? Looks like #15 is a mounting plug, and several will be needed per side, too?

Thanks!

Bump. I'm interested in doing this as well. Hopefully someone can confirm.

However the part is pretty expensive on ECS tuning ($177 per side), I wonder if you can get away with spray paint and clear on the existing pieces.

By the way, Armor All also makes a restorer product for trim pieces like this and it is priced reasonably. Why not first try some of that or Mothers Back to Black to see if that helps.

Wow zombie thread.

I think part #15 could be a pop rivet. I haven't looked at my coupe to be sure, but if it looks like metal then it probably is.

The part is incredibly overpriced.

I had mine sprayed before, does look much better. Is that part metal? Felt like plastic to me. If it is indeed plastic, you can try gtechniq C4 which works great on plastic trim.

part #15 is a plastic little pop in expander type plug. there are about 3 or 4 of them underneath the bottom of the window upper rail. they are tiny. They are supposed to hold in the uper rail guide, but on mine they did jack. I glued that rail back on. still have the little useless plugs. lol
