Swapped Starter, now EML and autoreving
2003 Z4 3.0i
Was getting the no-crank-no-start problem. Swapped the starter with new Bosch. Happily it started...yay! And then.... The EML light turned on and it autorevs. It's just like this: I swapped the starter out without taking the intake manifold off. Could I have busted something down there in the process? Or is there something else I should be trying to get the Z4 running again? |

The idle control valve sits down there (under the intake manifold). Maybe the connector got loose?
But as I see lights on the dashboard: codereader is your first friend.

So here's what I've found:
a) There is a tear in the intake boot...a small one in the smaller hose. Ordered a new one. However, online I see a lot of people replacing this part without and the symptoms are not the catastrophic failure I'm seeing; so I suspect my issue is more than that. b) I've got a fairly pedestrian OBD2 scanner. But the two codes it throws are: P1632 Throttle valve adaptation conditions not met P1635 Throttle valve adaptation; Lower mechanical stop not adapted |

A vacuum leak could cause rough idle and potentially cause throttlebody related fault codes.
anything behind the MAF has to be leakfree in order to function properly

Fix the tear and try manually resetting throttle adaptations.
1. Turn the ignition off and press the accelerator pedal all the way down to the floor. 2. While pressing the accelerator pedal down, turn the ignition to the ON position. Don’t start the engine. Continue to hold the pedal down for 30 seconds. 3. Turn the ignition off and remove the key while still holding pedal down. 4. After the key is removed from the ignition, release the pedal and wait 30 seconds. Start the car.

The TB should adapt itself automatically at every startup.

It “should” but doesn’t always, thus the incorporation of the manual procedure into the control strategy. I have used this many times to clear limp mode on MS45 and MSS70.
When you reset all adaptations via software, about 10% of the time the car will start in limp mode and require a manual throttle adaptations reset.

Those lights and behavior are exactly what I got when I recently changed the oil in my '06 M Roadster. Different engine, I know, but in my case it was that I forgot to plug in my throttle valve switch that sits right on top of the oil filter after disconnecting it to take the filter out. I think your "equivalent" idle regulating valve is on the intake manifold and may have become loose or undone (see realoem.com for your car under engine and then intake manifold system, items 7 and 8).
