The microphone mounts are generally used to keep a mic steady without external forces trying to bounce it. Seems like it may cause even more vibration if it starts resonating.

Thanks for the heads up. I think picking the right resistance RC suspension would be very challenging, so I'll start with those special washers

How do you shift so fast 1st-2nd ?
i don't see the slight pause that i need to do in order not to grind. Can you please elaborate roffle? Do you have an SSK or some transmission mounts or different transmission fluid? |

this one :
@26 secs You make a quick shift, i normally have to pause half a second here and then 2nd gear would shatter the earth underneath and hell will freeze over. yet you make it so smooth and peaceful as if you were not thinking about the shifting at all. |

Absolutely awesome rig, never seen any real-world video from this perspective. I can't wait to see more productions with it, even without further stability improvements |

That said, I think there could be great success with software-based image stabilization, especially if the video is shot at 60 or even 120fps (the original GoPro HD can do 60fps at 720p, and the new HERO2 supports 120fps at some resolution). I would do this in Final Cut Pro, but there are probably simpler software packages available that can do it. This technique will sacrifice a margin around the border of the video because it effectively needs to crop frames in different places and then translate them horizontally and vertically to line up with the previous frame, but I don't think it would need to crop enough to be really detrimental to the awesome effect! |

thanks man! Good tip about shooting at 60fps. I'll have to "buy" finalcut pro, but I doubt I'm smart enough to learn it. But then again I just need it for one function. Let me know if you find a simpler program, maybe one that just specializes in image stabilization

Do you have a Mac or a PC? I didn't immediately find a good stand-alone solution with a brief search on the web. iMovie is a lot cheaper / comes with Macs, and almost certainly has video stabilization filters as well. |

Wow! That's a great combination of ingenuity and, frankly, guts!
I really enjoyed the ride-along. I also appreciate what a little extra power might be like... I offer the following only because you seem to be "handy" and might want to pursue this further. Here's a simple gimbal design using a skateboard bearing and PVC: http://www.yb2normal.com/DIYsteadicam.html The gimbal will add weight but your latest design may be robust enough. You'll have to decide of course. Although there are a few DIY shock-cord mounts similar to a mic cage, I would agree with the comments above that oscillation at speed will likely make things worse and, under extreme conditions, tear the camera loose. The gimbal design shows promise, however. Best regards. |

Take a look here for more inspiration: http://www.filmtools.com/succupmoun.html
Here's an excerpt from the page... "Note: The beefier the mount, the less harmonic vibration will occur. More mass = less harmonics and vibration." |

heh, that bridge is tight.
You gotta stop by warminster sometime and teach me the best way to launch this car, and/or switch cars for a day

well... building that guibo thing was a waste of time and $40. Once I got it together I realised that the whole center mass with weights will just swing forwards and backwards as the car accelerates and decelerates. Not to mention it doesn't quell small vibrations too well. Its good for walking around the house like in the sample video... I guess
Going to order those washers next
