feel like building some brake ducts

so i need a small project i can work on, and decided i want to build some cooling ducts. i have the ducting itself and flanges just need a plate to mount the ducting to. most likely will be something custom since i have not seen any yet. anyways, here is a quick shop of where i want to place the ducts, finished in black. what do you think?

I'm planning to do the same thing in the same spot. Need to check if the E46 M3 backing plates fit our cars.

If enough people show interest, maybe we can get a shop to set up a group by.

I am in for it, and I'm sure many are.

I called and asked sometime ago. No one could give me a straight answer. Not sure their backing plates fit our brakes. If you have BBK you are in a different situation then the rest of us.

I'm curious to see what you find out, if they fit or if they can be modified to fit. Turner's brake backing plates say they are for the non-M Z4.

I bought a set a long time ago, they didn't fit.

Why are you guys thinking of putting ducts in that spot, would be easier to route from the OEM spot, just have to contend with the od shape opening.

The oem ducts blow air against the tire, and it would be harder to feed the ducting from where the opening is in the wheel well. Also, it would look modified from the front view and with the wheels off with cut and hacked wheel liner. I think placing them where I photoshoped will be a cleaner install and direct more air than using the factory ducts

When I was in the shop getting my car aligned and corner balanced, they asked me if I was interested in a brake duct kit. I said not until I have my BBK.

They were looking for a car to do the test fit to adapt their kit to. The guy wanting to do the work was the one who did the cage for z4mnyc, so he's very familiar with our cars (despite being a porsche shop). I'd be willing to let them use my car if there is enough interest.

Here is their kit for an E9x.

You will have to cut stuff out to run them there too. It's sealed.

Here's an install on a non-M Z4 coupe. I believe we could essentially do the same thing, but we have a different front suspension setup. Ours is closer to an E36 configuration than E46, but I'm not sure if E36 backing plates would work without some modification. I think you could modify the stock backing plate by cutting a hole and riveting on a duct, similar to this. I would either try to modify the backing plate in place or cut it off so I wouldn't have to remove the wheel bearing (unless I needed to replace the wheel bearing.) It would also make sense to run the intakes to the center grill and modify it so the outer holes are actually open as seen here.

Jon1275 did exactly what we are talking about using Turner's kit for the e46 m3.

He posted some picks here:

I understand a project, but do you have plans to track your car with that stance / those wheels? Otherwise, it's overkill for a show-pony.

Plus two big holes in your front fascia with some wire-wound ducting exposed would ruin the whole aesthetic.

Make sure u at least get some proper double ply ducting with a smooth inner wall for unrestricted flow.

I do go to the track with my car. Not religously since I have other priorities, but 2-3 times a season to open events. I don't think that makes the car a show-pony, lol. I drive it regularly on public roads. As for the ducts, I probably don't NEED them, but I think the car can only benefit from them. I also like the look and agressive apperance they give off, and I enjoy making things myself and figuring out mounting options ect.

Thank you exdos for the link. Very helpful as well
