New BMW Performance Brake kit. Z4 E86

Hey All,

Anyone fitted a Bmw Performance Brake kit on a Z4 E85/86 yet?

My tuner guy says the ones built for the 135i will fit, with same pots etc as the current 3.0si brakes, but bigger drilled rotors.

Im not expecting miracles in racetrack like braking performance, but a decent road (rare track day) improvement, and a much nicer look for the new rims i have coming too.

Info and experiences with them would be interesting. Cheers.

hmm interesting. They look good. I think I would opt for a BBK over these though.

Think i mentioned that is double the price. You paying?

Looking for experience of ppl who put on the bmw Perfromance brake set only here.

Also getting ready to adapt the rears on here in a few. The rear calipers bolt right on. The only thing I'm working on now is getting the right rotor.

well i have a 1 series performace rear rotor and it looks like it will fit but i need the time to take the thing apart and get at it.

the other is getting the custom rear brake line from bits and peices.



why whats the thread about! let me know if it will save me some time......

That 135i rear rotor is 324mm?
Does it have the same semi floating design as the front rotors (also like the z4m rotors, so with the aluminium centerpiece)?
Although that would be almost impossible for the price (just over $100/pc)
Or is it conventional?

outer dia: 324.0mm
height : 77.1mm
nom thick: 21.8mm
min thick : 20.4mm
hub reg:75.0mm






the rear Z4 3.0I rotor has these

outer dia: 294.0mm
height : 75.0mm
nom thick: 19mm
min thick : 17.4mm
hub reg:75.0mm





would this work or not from what this shows? if it works this would be great as the rotor and caliper work perfect together.

Looks interesting but there might be 2 issues.
I think the rotor will fit in the caliper (by diameter).
However if I look at pictures from the 135i rotor, it seems that the disc surface on the bottom side is flush with the rest. The Z4 rotor has a 4,35mm rim over there (see the brembo drawings). That means that the offset is 4,35 + 2.1= 6.45mm greater than the z4 rotor (the 2.1mm is the difference in height between the rotors). The X3 rotor I used had a 2mm less offset compared to the z4 rotor (according to the brembo drawings), so in total 8.45mm less offset than my installation. I used 7,65mm bushes, so if you bolt on the caliper directly it would be 0,8mm off centre. There's probably enough room for that in the caliper, but the pistons wont be 100% centered. Maybe this is all within tolerence of the products and my suspension hub is a bit off set

Where you do get a problem is with the protection plate. I used a e46 330i plate because of the orientation of the hand brake locking piece on the suspension arm. And I had to bend the plate a bit on the edges inwards because the rotor touched the cover there. You probably have a bad time to bend the plate that far that it clears the extra 8½mm.

Maybe the solution to that lies with the 135i protection plate. It looks (on the realoem drawings etc) that it is recessed a bit compared to its mounting flange.
So maybe that will fit with some work and solve that problem, but it's hard to see.

For keeping your e-brake you still have to make your own brake shoes, as all larger rotors require 185mm brake shoes and you can't change the way of the e=brake cable and the metal stop on the suspension arm. (or maybe......maybe........ a 330i suspension arm may fit )

As for your pm/question on the brake lines: I'm still working on that. I've used standard SS brake lines, but they are indeed too short due to the mounting hole not being angled down.
As a tempory solution I used a piece of copper brake line, flaired both ends with a brake hose coupling and bend the copper pipe 90 deg. down.
A bit shabby and definately not suitable to let the complete caliper dangle loose on the line. I'm looking for a solution with a banjo bolt and an adapter between the banjo bolt (usualle an-3) and the SS brake line (m10x1,5 or someting like that).
A longer SS brake line would have to make big bend inwards to reach the hole. Also not too nice...
I might have to look for a company to make a custom ss brake line. I want to bypass the short rubber line on the suspension arm as well.

You'll want to talk to Monty at bits and pieces, they can make a custom brake hose for you from Goodrich. I'm working with him to get me the correct end pieces but I need to give him the length. Best part is then it will also be DOT approved !
