If you were a die hard watch snob you would appreciate even G-Shocks, I know a few watch collectors (yes they have their Frank Mullers, Patek Philippes and Cartiers as well) but still wear G Shocks or Siekos once in a while to switch things up. They appreciate those as well. You just seem like you're after the price tag. Unless you can tell me what makes a 2.5k watch better then a 1k watch?

On another note, I don't think Sebastien Loeb needs a watch to relax him before a race.

He did win 9 WRC titles without a Richard Mille

There is however a scale of measurement where none of us would be at the same exact choice. Some are all car and others are all watch. Most are somewhere between with the deciding factors what car part/watch exactly? Cost versus performance etc.

Haha OP I like how you made this thread, cause lately this has been a thought in my mind that keeps coming and going lol. However, IMO a topic like this is very subjective but nevertheless I always end up buying parts lol!

Weirdly, this is startlingly relevant. Was just having this debate and opted for a whole car (an M2). Still might try and finagle the watch. It doesn't come out till mid- to late-summer. When weighing options like this, the best answer (if possible) is both.

I can name about 20 watches off the top of my head around $1k and below that have better movements and quality than a lot of $10k + watches. If you are all about the price, then you arent a true watch connoisseur. For under $2500 you can find Omegas with their excellent in house movements, Tudors, 100s of Swiss Made watches using ETA, modified ETA or complete in house movements, Grand Seikos with their 36,000bph (the AP RO is a 21,600bph for comparisons sake), etc...

As for Car Parts vs Watches, it depends on the watch and the part. If I'm between new turbo kit for $8k or $8k watch, ill go turbo kit. If im between $1500 wheels or $1500 watch, I may go watch depending on what it is.

hit up the watch forums and other used watch sites. there are plenty to be had out there.

I just recently bought an Aqua Terra and a Seamaster Pro for under $2500 each. Both used, but both in great shape and look the same as my watches ive bought new after a few months.

you can even find both of these new for only a couple hundred more if you hit the internet sales just right.

I guess I am more of a quantity guy. Could i spend $20k on an ugly over priced watch? Sure. Would i rather have 10 $2k watches, hell yeah

Interesting. I thought those watches were more in the $5-$8K range. Apparently, I had not paid close enough attention to the market. Or, maybe all the ones I was looking at were more "complicated". I honestly cannot remember when I last looked, but it was when they went more in-house. I have the original Bond watch SeaMaster Pro 300 (without all the 007 branding.) I have always liked Omega, but never really gotten into collecting them.

New from a Jeweler, yes they are in the $5-8k range. New from online stores, $3k-4k range. Used they are more in the $2k-$3k range give or take a couple hundred

Nothing wrong with buying from a jeweler either. Just want to throw that out there. I try to buy every 4th/5th watch from a local jeweler just to keep it local if nothing else. And they will work with you on pricing as well. The biggest + to buying from a local jeweler is they will usually service the watch for free, and you can build a rapport with them so when you have another watch that needs servicing, you have a trusted place to take it to.

Online/watch forum prices on Omega is pretty good. They are usually grey market watches or someone who bought it and is looking to unload their purchase. That's why if you're looking for a deal, you never need to pay MSRP on one. You do get the in-store service and a direct manufacturer's warranty card with your name on it with buying locally. It's really up to the buyer if that is worth a few thousand dollars more than the online price.

Some other watches such as certain Rolex models have less difference between online and in-store prices.

I've bought Big brake kits and Rolex watches. I always got my money back on the Rolex.... Even the ones I wore for 10 years on a daily basis. What else can you use everyday and get 100% of your money back in 10 years? What's not practical about that? BBK is just bling for the causal track day enthusiast anyway. You are better off getting the Rolex, putting track pads on your stock brakes and putting in a high temp fluid and keeping it fresh.

That's exactly what I'm running. Track pads on my stock calipers. Still, I've had BBK on previous cars before and it makes a huge difference. The single piston brakes on the M3 are a joke given the capabilities of its engine and chassis.

And I have a Rolex as well. I just don't wear it at the track.

You may not notice it because you are used to the watch, but you are absolutely right. I wear an Aquatimer which has a decent heft to it, always on my left wrist. Drove myself to allergist and they did that pin prick shit up my entire left arm. Had to drive home with the watch on my right. HOLY SHIT. I was driving like a drunk retard. Forget about shifting gears, just turning the wheel everything felt tremendously out of wack. I took it off eventually but tried for a bit to see if I could get used to it. Luckily I didn't get pulled over, I am sure the cops would have a tremendous amount of sympathy for some jackass driving a high end sports car and explaining the erratic driving by telling them his boo boos on his left arm hurt so his big expensive watch that would cost them 2 months salary was to blame.

Fun, if totally irrelevant way to kill lunch hour - I gotta vote for both, with a small advantage to car parts (spent more on those than watches since I got the BMW).

The only women I've ever known who could either spot or care about nice watches were pros - casino dealers, con artists, or escorts - they'll love that 3-way suggestion, since it ensures somebody can split with all your cash and valuables while you are distracted. And anybody who needs a fine watch to get psyched up on track needs to spend a few bucks with a sports psychologist (or go back to racing online in mom's sims). And do people even wear a watch on track? Ever seen what one looks like after it strips off in a high-speed impact (hint - it slips right off your wrist, if there isn't a thumb in the way).
