Coupe Rear Quarter Glass/Rubber Molding

Can anyone tell me who has replaced their quarter windows or taken them off, does the rubber molding come off the window easily?

If say the molding was reproduced, would it be reasonably possible to remove quarter window, replace molding and reinstall?

For those that don't know you cannot buy the molding without buying the window with molding attached. These moldings are all going to fail, most are turning into gummy junk.

I want to explore having them reproduced and making them available at a reasonable price...

I'd buy a pair. I've never seen a quarter window where the rubber part couldn't be separated from the glass, but I don't have any experience with the E86 one

Yea, I'm just worried its glued on in a fashion in which it would get destroyed removing or make for a bad molding original.

like many other coupes from all makes, the rubber is bonded to the glass and sold as one piece.

from what i have seen from other makes, it pretty much destroys the black painted border under the glass when trying to remove the rubber from the glass making it look like doo doo anyways.

not 100% sure if its the same on the e86 though.

I have removed mine. The rubber cannot be removed from the glass and reused. You have to buy the window with the rubber.

I've checked a few places and so far the Coupe rear quarter window/seal is NLA.

The point of this thread was to discuss making a seal since AFAIK, the seal has never been available separately and required purchasing the window with seal as an assembly. So NLA should be NBA (never been available) lol.

The assembly (clear glass & seal) seem to still be available in Europe (as are the tinted ones).

I'm glad I found this. My driver side molding is gummy. I've never seen that before and wondered if the previous owner did something odd.

I'm not yet prepared to buy new glass to address this but does anybody know how difficult it is to replace the glass? Is it an easy enough DIY job? Is it glued in like a windscreen?

The guy who replaced my windows did it in less than an hour with the help of his assistant. He charged me $300 for the labor but he did come to my house to do the job and was the cheapest estimate I got.

If the rubber can’t be removed, do you think it’s possible to make some kind of cover for the moldings? Maybe it can help extend the life of the seals and hide those that have already turned gunky. Mine weren’t too bad. It would’ve been nice if we there was some kind of cover option instead of replacing the windows.

Mine feel kind of tacky now but nowhere near gummy. Would be interested in another solution if available. Seems crazy to have to replace the entire window.
