New Owner - Ugh the bluetooth
Just picked up a 2006 Z4M Roadster in Phoenix this weekend. Have had no luck linking up my phone. I can see the car on my phone trying to add and enter the PK but the phone never connects. Thinking the cars memory is full but the delete procedure doesn't work.
Tried in all key positions 0,1,2. Anytime I hold the face speaking button for any amount of time it wants me to give command. I can't get it into any setting mode. Any complex tips in deleting the phones in memory? Thanks

I gave up trying to get Bluetooth to pair to mine after ~2012. Your point about cleaning out old phone pairings wasn’t something I heard of before. I’m pretty confident you’ll need the pairing/security code from the owner card provided when it was sold/delivered new regardless.
Keep in mind what I started with about giving up… I might accidentally be full of s@#t. ;-)

Get a bluebus system. I have a grom system but it's not perfect. Bluebus does not require any splicing or tapping. Uses OEM connectors.

Yeah I have that manual, but I guess some things changed beginning in 2006, because I don't have to press any buttons to try to link the phone as its in pairing mode when car turns on. When I see BMW 5xxxx on my phone I click to connect, enter the PK code which I have, it works to connect then just disappears and does not connect. The PO had the car since new so I am guessing phone memory is full as it only stores 4? Manual mentions some button above the storage compartment but doesn't show pic of location or what button looks like, been meaning to look better as not sure if it means compartment between seats or glove box or something else.
I'd rather not spend $250 on a module, wont be using the phone much, wife knows if I am in a vert and she calls its unlikely I will answer. Will be at the dealer later this week to pickup my new M4 so will ask people if they know.

The call quality is pretty horrible, and worse when the top is down. I have to lean forward and almost eat the microphone. I'd say the only utility is to see that a call is coming in and answer it to make sure it's not an emergency or to give a quick answer to something. Definitely don't want to try and hold a conversation. |

OP, I very much understand your frustration. I don't even remember the specific steps now, but I kept at it and eventually paired...and this is after I had made sure that I had read and followed the procedure to the T multiple times! I hate the process everytime I get a new phone. The delete procedure that I read on the web does NOT seem to work for me either. The car do appear to be able to pair with more than 4 phones for sure as my current phone is the 5th phone that I had paired with the car. Although, I don't know if it automatically erase the oldest one in it's memory as I no longer have that one to try.
All I can say is keep rereading the procedures and keep trying. Good luck.

Thanks guys, I just got the car and besides giving it a good washing after the 700 mile trip home I haven't played with it, need to get some top sealant as I don't have any old stash and just gave it a good scrub.
Theres an apple cable in the glove box, not sure what its connected to and what the PO used it for. If theres a mini plug somewhere might get a cheap bluetooth adapter for audio, one decent radio station in the area and mine doesn't have Sat radio though I am done with Sirius and been canceling all my other cars.

IDK, for over a decade that I've owned my Z4, I've paired more than 6 phones and never remember having any difficulties or having to delete memory. The sound and mic quality seem pretty average and I have no problem hearing/speaking on calls, though I have a coupe. I could imagine a vert with the top down being pretty weak due to wind noise.

My OE bluetooth gave up the ghost several years back, though. It had a good run. Replaced it with GROM and then with BlueBus and have been happy since.

I Bluetooth in via a Tunai Firefly for quality audio. If someone calls me they get the speakerphone. Maybe I am not normal but when I am in the zed phone calls aren’t as important.

Took the Z4 out for date night and my phone was asking me for contact etc access from the car, it connected after allowing and it works now. Guess it just took the car a week to process and figure it out sitting in the garage. lol

The sound quality on the OEM system is absolute garbage by modern standards. Don't forget that this car (as the non-M Z4) was introduced 20 years ago (2003). Get a modern bluetooth adapter that can handle your phonecalls + stream music and be much happier.

I find the sound quality just fine. It's a roadster, wind in the hair etc.
Besides that, the blower whine and growl of the Supersprint is all the music I need.

I used the OEM Bluetooth for about 6 months until I decided to get a GROM. I never could get the GROM to work with my '08 Z4, so I returned it and bought a BlueBus. BlueBus was not only plug n play, but the developer found a way to enhance the sound. The cost was the same as buying an aftermarket head unit, but you get to keep the OEM dash look. I'm extremely pleased with BB.

What is the procedure to pair a Samsung S21 to my 2007 3.0si?

Honestly even on my other cars I owned at the time when I first had my 07 e86, the Bluetooth audio was just as bad. The Z has the be far worse given the cabin noise. Better off talking on speaker or just getting a bluetooth kit imo. I’d hardwire a kit like this:

I’ll try and find my manual and post a pic of what it says about pairing. In the meantime and if you have your 4 digit pk code, turn the car on and change the car from radio to telephone using the R/T button on the steering wheel and then follow the pairing process that is on your phone.
Re the sound quality of the OEM unit, everyone says it’s bad. But I must have one of the few cars where that isn’t so. I can generally hear folks quite well and they assure me that they can hear me too. Am I doing 90 mph on the interstate top down during such calls? No! But for just driving around town with the top down on a nice day, I’ve had no issues to speak of (bad pun). Last edited by Huz-Z; 06-20-2022 at 11:11 AM.. |
