What tire size for square setup?

Since our stock Diameter is 25.72 R and 25.97 F, the popular choices are 265/35-18 square.

It's the 265 is 25.3" in diameter but smaller than stock. Shorter side wall, better turn in and more torque.

Has anyone tried 255/40-18? Recommend, against, or? Diameter is 26.03" which is less of a Delta than going 265.

Just got a killer deal on a set to try in those sizes and they might fit better in the front width wise. It'll be my first attempt at 200 tread wear set.

TIA,

I haven't run them but up front the taller profile could cause and issue depending upon wheel offset. 245-255-265 all fit width wise but I've encountered contact with the rear of the front bumper with a 265-40 series over the 35.....plus I like the gearing advantage even if it's small.

Nice wheels and I had a set of BBS RGR in Diamond Black 19s prior and still miss them. What tire and size are you running?

Just realized that you're in Kelowna, might be heading over there during the summer. Give me a shut when you're in Van.

I run a 265/35/18 square setup on 9.5" 35ET wheels with a 5mm plate up front and 10mm in the rear. Springs are H&R lowering springs. Some adjustment was needed to ensure no rubbing, but now even when racing autox they don't.

This is exactly the answer I'm looking for. Thank you! I have 5mm and 12mm and will try those with my current alignment.

Before making the swap, be prepared to max out the front camber. I run -3* up front and had it ready to go before putting on the front wheels. I use camber washers to get the extra bit up front.

@Jackal

Do you think I can run that with OE suspension and camber washers? I've already got the pin pulled and Max out at 2.1° in the front I think. I want to go with those tires before I do suspension upgrade and over-hual.

TIA,

TIA,
You will be okay with pin removed and turners camber washers on oe suspension. I tracked that setup with minimal issues. I also run a 5mm spacer front and 10mm spacer rear

Thank you for that info. I'll purchase the Turner camber washers and get an alignment done. Already installed 5mm & 12mm spacer last night, with old 245/275. Once they are out, I'll try 265 all around. Much appreciated.

I'm glad the OP was able to find the size for their setup but does anyone have actual experience with 255/40R18 as a square fitment on 9.5" rims? It irritates me if my speedo is under-reporting and while a 40 profile results in the same OD as original I'm unsure if it'll rub with a mild (~1/2") drop. Yes I realize a 35 profile may have slightly better feel and better for torque but it's also worse at handling rougher roads? and greater speedo error!

I like that the 255 tread width (for the MPSS tire) matches the 9.5" rim which is why I'd like to stick with that size.

I got my current daily set from tire rack when they had the Conti DW on clearance, 255/40/18 and 275/35/18 to go on a set of Arc-8 18x9 et42 (12 mm spacer) and 18x10 et 20. When it came to mount them, the 255/40 were WAY too tall and hit the fender liners everywhere (even with -2.7* camber in the front on stock suspension!). Needless to say, had to scrap the 255/40 idea and go to 255/35/18 instead. Fixed the height/rub issue and fit quite nicely.

IMO 255/40 MPSS on the stock 9" rears are stretched AF, so I can only imagine 9.5" would be worse. Why not do a square 265/35 instead?

Thanks, just the confirmation I needed. I ended up with 255/35 and they look great (not a fan of the stretched look either but these are just right). I tried putting on the 9.5" ET35 rims with stock suspension and it just touches the strut. A 5mm spacer should solve that problem!

What was the adjustment you did to fit your tires/wheels? Did you shim the spring perches?

What tire brand/model are you running? I plan on running RE71R or Rival S, I know the actual tire sizes vary from model to model and brand to brand.

How well do the stock dampers handle the H&R springs?

Any pics?

Thanks!

Carl
