Automatic shifter knob

The leather was worn out on the automatic shifter knob on an E85 that I purchased. These knobs have at least 3 different shaft lengths across the BMW range. Searching E85 alone was producing expensive results. I figured out the interchange and was then able to find one in new condition for 20.00.

These all have the same shaft length and interchange:
1 Series 04-13 E81 E82 E87 E88
3 Series 05-11 E90 E91 E92 E93
6 Series 04-10 E63 E64
X1 Series 09-14 E84
Z4 Series 03-on E85 E89

Removal is easy. Put it in neutral, pull straight up with force. Try not to punch yourself in the face in the process. Happy shopping!

That is a great reference. Was anything else involved? I mean just pull straight up and nothing to detach beforehand such as release button.

Plenty of how to’s online. I really hate just yanking on something like that till it lets go but that is obviously how they intended it to be replaced.

That is slick Roranji, I think I will grab one. The forward top portion of mine is peeling just above the button. Not terrible but it is annoying. Thank you for the link.

Thanks! That looks great!

Can the install be done by just pulling the old knob and removing the shift boot?

Thanks again for the pics!!

Yes, ill take some more detail photo, so it routes the led to the shifter but you can connect the one on the base plate or have it in 2 places. I just use the one on the shifter. I plan to cf wrap the plastic base and just cover it.
