Should I buy it back?

Brand new to the forum, but thought this would be the best place to start. I have a 2006 3.0i w manual 6-speed, and recently was rear ended at a stop light (light turned green, big truck behind me didn't see me and push me out of the way). From what I can visibly see, the damage is cosmetic (trunk, quarter panel, tail light) but the insurance company is going to total it because the repairs are going to be roughly $8K, and the parts are 6-8 weeks out. I asked about buying the car back, and I can do so for $2,900. My question is, would it be worth buying it back and repairing it as I go, or even potentially parting it out? I feel like $2,900 is a good deal (even with a salvage title). Full disclosure, I only gave $6,800 for the car, and prior to the accident was in above average condition. If they are valuing it at over $11K, I would recoup everything I have in it plus $4,200.

Thoughts?

If they're saying it's an $8k repair bill, what else have they found that isn't cosmetic?

Or are those prices for a brand new bumper, wing, trunk lid, etc.?

I've requested a breakdown of the cost, and they are supposed to send it to me today with the official "total loss" disclosure. I believe they are replacing with all OEM parts. I am curious to see if anything was found that isn't visible/cosmetic.

PM me if you get it back. I might be interested in good number of parts. Thanks.

You could buy it back to fix it up yourself. That could be worth it. Rear bumper, Rear left QP, Trunk, 3rd brake light. New parts might be quite expensive but if you go the used route you could polish the whole car I guess.

That’s what I would do.

There are places you can get parts used. You can even find them in the same color. Check out this site. https://www.car-part.com/?fbclid=IwA...qS_VHPkxlnWjzA

Yup, I replaced my driver's door that had a hole from a stray bullet. Unneeded expense caused by a random person with ill intentions. Found a door in the same color and a good price. Transferred the old door panel since the small hole was barely visible in the black panel and sold the old door and parts for $100. car-part.com is a really good site to filter down parts. Sometimes recyclers tend to give extra with the part so you could possibly make some money back.
