Some video from latest Track Day at Laguna Seca
Here is one of my better laps:
Feedback is very welcome, I wrote what I think I need to improve on in terms of lines in the description of the video. After that hopefully I can start practicing on when and how hard to brake and throttle application and smoothness. I'm still a rookie so all feedback is welcome and appreciated, I know I have a long way to go! I'll upload more later, I have a few laps of trying to catch up with dorifto88 while he was pulling some decent laps in front of me. |

I use a Contour camera, and it has the map and speed overlay built in. I'm going to try mounting it outside the car next time, or maybe setting the focus manually since it seems to be focusing on the dash and hood most clearly and everything else seems slightly out of focus.

Just watched the vid finally (was on the phone earlier, and didn't have wifi available. 3G kinda sucks for streaming lol).
Your lines look good Gernard, keep up the good work! As you get more familiar with your own car and any given track, you'll be able to carry more speed into and out of each corner. You'll be able to shave a ton of time by braking later, but harder (might require pad and/or fluid upgrade at the least). I would also take 3rd gear down the corkscrew to shoot out better, and then stay in 3rd for turn 9 lefty. You're currently not tracking all the way out on every single exit, but that's only because you're still taking it easy. Once you're more familiar with everything, I'm sure you'll be able to run a faster pace, which will automatically bring you out wider every corner. It'll be like second-nature, since you wouldn't otherwise be able to carry speed unless you take "straighter" lines from berm to berm, etc. But like I said, all in all, superb thus far Will be up to good pace in NO TIME! What tires and sizes are you running currently? |

Might I suggest double-apex for turn 2 Andretti hairpin. It's a relatively safe defensive line. Safe because even if you kick out your rear end (which I sometimes actually have to intentionally induce), you still have run-off space. Whereas if you take a single-apex offensive line, you have to dive deeper into the corner before you turn; and thusly have less runout room. Where you had your camera mounted made it seem like your track-ins (turn-ins) were a tad bit late per corner, but maybe they were just fine in real life? For you specifically Sat, you'll gain TONS of speed and reduce your lap times by a lot once you get used to shifting more 4th for main straight, 4th between turns 5 and 6, and then I would stay in 4th as well all the way up the hill for the back straight; then downshift to 3rd for the corkscrew and finish the remainder of the lap in 3rd. I also recommend 2nd gear at turn 11 if you really need to shoot out of there fast and stay ahead of certain scary Miatas and/or S2Ks Seems that way I've been able to go full throttle all day. Now I need to make sure my diff doesn't have any issues. P-Tech thinks that my diff has too much play and I may need a rebuild, with new LSD unit.. |

Try mounting the iphone next time where you can see your hands. I did this last time out and it was really telling. Some pinched turns, not opening steering enough when rolling back on the throttle, etc. What you think you're doing vs. what your really doing can be different things! I know what to do, but really couldn't see my errors until, well, I saw them. I think you may be making some rather abrupt steering inputs on corner entry (5 and 6 for example) where smoothing out brake release and turn-in would provide more traction and speed, but it's hard to tell without being able to see. |

It's through the bmwcca (part of oktoberfest)...Hopefully I can start making it to a few track events a year, maybe through NCRC or Trackmasters. Please let me know if there are any other groups you'd suggest for track days, I'm pretty new to the NorCal area, thanks!

Btw, I prefer NASA if you are looking for the fastest drivers. It does have the most drivers on track in a session and probably the most expensive though. Why not try them all to see what you like best. Last edited by seank; 06-10-2013 at 12:04 AM.. |
