In addition to my Z4MC, I have an E92 M3, an E46 330i ZHP Wagon, and a tuned E70 X5 Diesel. All cars are cool in their own way. The X5D is the only car thats automatic.

The X3 M is amazingly capable, but in my opinion the extra performance over a X3 M40i isn't worth the trade off in how rough the ride is. I would get a X3 M40i and a tune, then take the savings and get a track day Miata or E36.

What E46 do you have - I still think E46 is the best M-car BMW ever made. So balanced.

I do have other cars, these just felt like comparable Z4M equivalents.

The other fun car is a 1999 Miata I built in my garage this past year to save the aging Z4MC from additional track miles. Upgraded cooling, clutch, full race suspension, poly bushings, 4-pt roll bar, recaros, etc. Feels fast, is slow. +1 for the Miata club

Throw some boost on your Miata and it'll change to feels really fast, is fast. And it really comes down to how you're willing to push your car. At my last track day I was keeping a good balance with a F80 M3. He had more speed on the straights and fast sweepers, but my Miata was carrying more speed through the tighter corners. We were both lapping the Hellcat that showed up. We ended up running similar lap times.

Nice! This one is my 4th E46M, and I actually prefer SMG to 6-speed (2 of my prior E46s were manuals). I have enough manual cars to appreciate what SMG is capable of, and it is a fantastic gearbox if you know how to use it properly. My current E46 is a Competition (ZCP) and is also Carbon black, so was my very first one. Love the color, though, I would get a clean LSB if I had the chance.

For those days when I don't want to or just can't put the top down, and perhaps I need something smoother and quieter for the highway, I have a 2015 Lexus RC350, "infrared" on the outside and tan leather on the inside.

More power is certainly in the works although I want to stay low enough to avoid overhauling the braking system. The car is hard to beat on any tighter road course and is a riot to drive - harnesses and bucket seats may do that. After ~170 hours wrenching on the Miata I need to show the Z4MC a little bit of TLC.

Beauty! Still have a bit of cosmetic work to do on ours, exterior trim and replacing the tint but still is a blast.

If you like how the Z4 Roadster drives and that is part of your "cool" designation, then just get a nice E90 (i.e. the sedan) with a manual transmission and sport package. The best find would be a 2006 330i, which are unicorns at this point, but the 325i, which is what I have (as an original owner) would do as well. Later years of the E90 up to about 2010 are great driver cars, but only with the manual. The E90 is a tank, and nearly on par with tank'ness of the E85/86. It is quite roomy inside and has a large trunk. Any non-M 3-series after the E90 is crap as far as being an ultimate driving machine. I've had my E90 for over 15 years and 400,000 miles and I still look forward to driving it a few days a week.

I have a 2008 Z4 3.0si Coupe, it's the 3rd less-daily driven in my fleet.

But what you've not disclosed is what your level of DIY is; that is a key factor in your decision.
Amazing timing! I am close to closing a deal on a 2009 E90 (328i) manual with sport package. This is a compromise, since (1) it's very difficult to find a manual at all and (2) 335i tend to be outside my price range thanks to the run-up in prices. It's a winter car, after all, so I can't complain. Though I do worry about being disappointed in comparison to my z4 3.0si, in terms of power-to-weight. I hope the car will still be fun.

Eventually, it'll be replaced by something more fun, probably an M235, when my budget allows.

As far as my DIY ability: I will try to do anything I can on my own. Only if it's too risky or complex will I take it to my local shop. Can you expand on it being a "key factor in my decision"?

+1 for E90 328 over 335 in terms of reliability and cost of ownership. Driving experience is nearly identical, the only real difference being 70HP. Your wallet will thank you.
